Four months on from Tom Hoare's review and it's still not a much better. However, having recently travelled around a lot of Morocco, the food that 'Sahara' served was pretty good and tasted authentic, though the Couscous wasn't great and rather small portions. The menu is limited in options but traditional at least, serving tagine/tajin with; lamb on the bone, lamb kofta, local fish or vegetables only, in authentic earthenware pots and are just enough for one person or multiples to share as we usually prefer to do. 'Sahara' charge at the time I went £3 per person for BYOB Bring Your Own Bottle which is a little steep, but still cost effective, especially as we brought wines and champagne, which if bought in any restaurant, would cost more than the food in total. So the food is fine and decor is rather good too, making the place feel authentic, though the rows of high tables and hard chairs make it feel more like a cafe than restaurant. 'Sahara' has a lovely cul-de-sac if you like towards the rear of the restaurant for larger groups were we sat, with a large curved sofa-like seats. The problem with using this part of the restaurant, is the tables are very low, as they use collapsible stools to place large serving trays on, which act as your table. Looks nice and authentic, but the sofa-like chairs are very high, making it very uncomfortable to eat anything without making a huge mess or indigestion. You honestly would be better sitting on the floor, which I think 'Sahara' should consider in doing, allowing even more people to sit and a lot more comfortable. Lastly, I didn't like the staff much. The owner/manager or who he was running the place, did not make us feel welcome and wasn't helpful in anyway. I expect at least a smile and/or some verbal communication as you enter an 'empty' restaurant, but got nothing except for a casual nod. When I asked how much they charge for BYOB, he said "it's £3 for each person" in tone like it was bad deal and we shouldn't do it?!? He didn't ask how many glasses, if we wanted anything to start with or even that thing we do as humans ...hello's ...welcome's ...nothing. 'Alex' the waiter running around was a lot friendlier and helpful, making us all feel a lot more comfortable, but sadly sounded like he's leaving the country for a different perspective on the world, so 'Sahara' will lose it's helpful and friendly smile. There are 'many' other better restaurants in near area and though the food at 'Sahara' is good, it has ample room for improvement and a much needed friendlier smile. Note: 'Sahara' is not hugely suitable for disabled or the elderly, as the toilets/wash-rooms are only accessible via long steep steps on the next floor up.
Sub-par food, slow service, just a really cheap and tacky vibe about the whole place. Even with Taste Card this was overpriced. Avoid.
Great value lunch, extremely fresh and very tasty food! Staff helpful and friendly.
Lovely, flavourful food - nice service - great value!
