Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa

Story

Ruthin Castle is a medieval castle fortification in Wales, near the town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd. It was constructed during the late 13th century by Dafydd ap Gruffydd, the brother of Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, on a red sandstone ridge overlooking the valley. Part of the ancient walls still remain and now form part of the Ruthin Castle Hotel.HistoryRuthin Castle occupies a site that was first used as an Iron Age fort. In 1277, Edward I of England granted the land to Dafydd ap Gruffydd in gratitude for his assistance during the invasion of North Wales. It is unclear whether there was an existing fort on the site or whether Dafydd established the castle. The castle was originally given the Welsh name of Castell Coch yn yr Gwernfor (Welsh Red Castle in the Great Marsh). The castle was most notably the base of that branch of the noble de Grey family accorded the title "Barons Grey de Ruthyn" and the head of their marcher lordship of Dyffryn Clwyd. It was a base for Reginald Grey, 3rd Baron Grey de Ruthyn – the man who could be said to have sparked the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr.

We stayed as part of a 3 night Secret Escapes bed and breakfast deal. A good deal it was too. Our room 308 was on the top floor in a turret. Given its size and the cold weather we were pleasantly surprised how warm the room was. We had good WiFi too - again perhaps a surprise given the age of the building and we were high up in. The whole hotel had a tremendous wow factor - this is the overall impression I was left with.nnI've seen other reviews and can agree to an extent. At times the service at the buffet breakfast, though friendly, was lacking no eggs one morning and the nice yoghurts had gone by the third day. We also had an empty soap dispenser on arrival which, despite us leaving a note for a refill the following morning, hadn't been. This was soon remedied when we asked at reception.nnAlthough we walked around the huge building we never found the spa - not that we're bothered with such things. Having come up from Kent we're keen to get out and about and then arrive back at the hotel exhausted, too tired to worry about spas.nnRuthin itself is charming in the gorgeous Vale of Clwyd.
Secret Escapes booking, £145 DBB with a bottle of Prosecco in the room. Found the hotel ok with the post code. Check in was easy, although having received an email prior to the day to check in, but it didn't work. Strange thing being they wanted dates of birth for all guests!!. This hotel has no lift. We were on the first floor and from car park to our room we had to climb 37 steps in total. No offer of assistance. Room was large two easy chairs, ensuite bath with shower over. Four poster bed, which was very rickety, just a double. Although clean the room needed decorating. Ditto the bathroom, grime in the grouting and along the mastic areas. Dinner was very good, aubergine covered with parmasan, spicy cherry tomatoes and salad. Steak, chips and tomato. Very tasty. Finished with cheesecake, 2 scoops of sorbet and ice-cream. Very noticeable being several windows didn't close properly so depending where you sat, it could be crafty and with the weather being just 3 degrees it wasn't comfortable. Breakfast was entirely buffet, no option to order from the kitchen. Good array of full English but the fruit section was lacking. Just prunes, apple, whole orange and yoghurt. Toast and croissants with jam. All good, no complaints but was restricted. Bar prices were ok, pint and gin and mixer £13.10. Paid much much more in other bars. Staff were great, polite and helpful.
We’ve been there for one night and two days the staff were kind. We had been there for spa too. We used sauna without dress, but the staff said it is not allowed, while there was no info about wearing anything or not wearing, neither on the website, nor on the info plate on sauna zone. So it was their fault. Also the jacuzzi was dirty as you can see in pictures. We asked for jacuzzi that is further , they said they aren’t available. But when the other British people came, the staff gave them the further jacuzzi. We were shocked.nThey served afternoon tea for British women as you can see in the pictures exactly like the pictures on website in the all white porcelain teapot and tea service, while for us steel teapot and no fresh material and vegetable as you can see in the pictures.nI faced to Racism. I really tried to not saying that and not believing it. But as far as i looked everything, all signs said that. We won’t go back there.nnPositive points: their food is really delicious. The receptionist staff kind and polite too. Those were only happy moments to remember.
Beautiful location, incredibly scenic and romantic. You could spend a lot of time just slowly meandering around the castle.nDinner service was a little slow but the food was a good standard. Breakfast needed topping up a bit but the food that was available was lovely. The spa package was a nice feature to have included in the package but it wouldn't have been worth paying to have separately. Sauna, steam room, and thirty minutes in a bog standard jacuzzi.nOverall worth a drive to experience, staff were friendly and add that bit of warmth to the cold nights in a castle
We booked an over night stay, in a suite, to celebrate our ruby anniversary recently. From the moment of arrival it was an amazing stay. The staff were all so welcoming! Food was delicious! Our room stunning! The castle and grounds are utterly gorgeous! Even the rain couldn't dampen our stay! It will forever be a wonderful memory for us both.
