Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa

Story

Ruthin Castle is a medieval castle fortification in Wales, near the town of Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd. It was constructed during the late 13th century by Dafydd ap Gruffydd, the brother of Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, on a red sandstone ridge overlooking the valley. Part of the ancient walls still remain and now form part of the Ruthin Castle Hotel.HistoryRuthin Castle occupies a site that was first used as an Iron Age fort. In 1277, Edward I of England granted the land to Dafydd ap Gruffydd in gratitude for his assistance during the invasion of North Wales. It is unclear whether there was an existing fort on the site or whether Dafydd established the castle. The castle was originally given the Welsh name of Castell Coch yn yr Gwernfor (Welsh Red Castle in the Great Marsh). The castle was most notably the base of that branch of the noble de Grey family accorded the title "Barons Grey de Ruthyn" and the head of their marcher lordship of Dyffryn Clwyd. It was a base for Reginald Grey, 3rd Baron Grey de Ruthyn – the man who could be said to have sparked the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr.

I LOVE this place.nThe staff are so friendly and welcoming and every single staff member went out of their way to interact with my 7yr old daughter.nThe grounds are spectacular and there's plenty of parking too.nThe food was first class and although a little pricey it was worth it!nOur room was beautiful and very comfy.nThe only downside was we didn't come across The Grey Lady.... but maybe on our next visit we might catch a glimpse!nThank you again to all the staff!!!!
First time going and already want to go back. The hotel is set in and amongst the castle and it’s great fun to explore. There are areas we would have liked to see but were closed as they’ve become hazardous.nnOverall it was a great time with good food and a great stay. There’s a large spa on site along with a bar and restaurant.nnWith the historic market town of Ruthin close by too there’s a bit to explore, along with the great landscape of Wales!nnWill be staying again for sure but hopefully a little longer.
I booked a spa morning as a birthday gift for my girlfriend and I to enjoy. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by a very efficient and friendly Jordan. He showed us around and ensured we were on time to our activities. The hot tub was so nice, with a clean and fresh feel. Even the peacocks said food morning. Our massage therapist was Eleni, who was superb with a very professional and thorough treatment, which my girlfriend and I enjoyed very much indeed. The rest of the relax and quiet areas including steam room were amazing too, with hygiene being a big focus in this review.nFinally Rory in the Tavern cafe was very friendly and efficient too. His afternoon teas were to die for!! I would definitely recommend Ruthin Castle Spa to anyone considering it.
My wife & I and my daughter & her partner stayed in Ruthin for the weekend. We visited Ruthin Castle for a walk and Sunday lunch. I have to say it was one of the nicest Sunday lunches I have ever had and my family agreed.nFirstly we had a stroll around the grounds which was very relaxing with lovely views. We received a brochure from the receptionist which explained the history of the castle and then had a stroll through the corridors and grounds which was well explained.nAs we were early for our meal we sat in the rear beer garden and enjoyed a few drinks in the sun. An excellent area to relax and enjoy the peacocks.nThen for dinner. We were shown to our table in a medieval room which had a fabulous ambiance. We all had the Sunday roast which was excellent quality and great value for money and it came with a bottle of wine.nAll the staff were very smart, attentive and efficient.nI would highly recommend Ruthin Castle for a visit and food.
LOVED this place. The grounds are spectacular. I particularly enjoyed watched the peacocks strut around and we had many strolls around the property. Our room was cute, not the most comfortable mattress but it was OK. The linens were good. The service was excellent at every turn. The food was delicious. The place overall had a great vibe.
