Railway fields

Story

Railway Fields is a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade I, in Harringay the London Borough of Haringey. About one hectare in area, it was a railway goods yard until 1967.Habitat, flora and faunaMuch of the site is wooded with open birch woodland running along part of the boundary with the railway. Denser woodland and scrub occupies much of the rest of the site. There are areas of grassland and a small pond. At the centre of the reserve, a wooden cabin provides an office and a classroom.Over 200 species of wild flowers have been recorded. This includes the unique Haringey Knotweed discovered in 1987, a cross between the Japanese Knotweed and the Russian vine. More than sixty species of birds have been observed since Railway Fields opened.HistoryThe area that is now the Railway Fields nature reserve was established as a goods yard on the Tottenham and Hampstead Junction Railway in 1868. It seems likely that the main use of the goods yard was for coal.Just under 100 years later, in 1967, the yard was closed. In 1975 it was acquired by Haringey Council for a community centre for Haringey Social Services. In 1986 it was opened as a nature park and used as an educational nature reserve. In 1990 it was declared a statutory local nature reserve. The site is protected as public recreation space in perpetuity as a Fields in Trust Queen Elizabeth II field.

Such a hidden local gem! Fantastic for a walk with the dog, there's lots of green areas for the doggos to explore. The only unfortunate part about this park are its opening hours: only on weekdays and until the dawn! So you're lucky if you spot the open gate.
We have been going to green lanes for 20+ years and only found out about the nature reserve recently. It is an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of green lanes. Ideal for kids and the grown up.
A brilliant little nature reserve tucked in next to the railway tracks and the New River.
Small but a nice green gem. Seems a very much unknown area of parkland, that in fact may be the charm. Reminds me of parkland walk a few miles away. Just a nice spot to get away from the bustle of green lanes.
Most awesome nature reserve. Always something new to see in the meadow and along the paths.. Amazing diversity of trees. Full of birds. Neighbourhood gem. Has been especially beautiful this year.
Fascinating sliver of wooded greenery on the otherwise densely built-up Green Lanes. Bits of track are still visible from when this was a railway siding. It's now home to tall trees and tangled undergrowth. Much expanded since I visited 5 or 6 years ago now with multiple paths, hidden swings, secret benches and glimpses of the New River. It's the sort of forgotten, overgrown place that you wish you'd had as garden when you were growing up.
Nice place to spend an afternoon with kids - swings, mud kitchen, wildlife, train watchingVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
