Interesting and free place to visit with an Arthur Conan Doyle exhibition downstairs and other displays with highly detailed home scene sets upstairs. Fully accessible and with parking. Short walk from Portsmouth Harbour Station and Gun Wharf QuaysVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
It is so beautiful with a feeling of real objects with sound. Objects are created as they are real, and you are walking past in history. The delighting fact is that entry is free. I have enjoyed looking into it .Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
Fantastic local museum, if you are local and haven't been it's a great idea to check it out - it's free! First thing, it is 100% wheelchair accessible as far as I can see, there is a lift to the upper floors and gently sloping ramps around the exhibits, as well as some onsite parking. Second, this is perfect for kids. Plenty of interactive exhibits, some drawing, some touchy-feely, some video watching there's plenty to do if the kids enjoy a museum environment. As it's Easter there is an Easter hunt going on, with chicks in various exhibits and a maritime themed search for little crochet/knit creatures as well. The ground floor has a Sherlock Holmes/Sir Arthur Conan Doyle exhibit which is thorough while being a little bit dark - I assume to protect the items? The second floor has examples of house interiors complete with some semi-creepy models of people as well as history of Portsmouth. Up top there is decorative arts closed for renovation, football and the 'collections'. While some of the interactive buttons don't work, small kids probably won't mind and there's enough stuff to look at overall. And if it's sunny there's a little outdoor area as well. The cafe is very small, and quite loud however that is to be expected. The shop is well appointed and has a nice variety of goodies if you are so inclined. There is some parking onsite, and some paid parking directly on the road. About 7-10 minute walk away around the Norfolk Street area there is on-street parking 3 hours for free, no return within 4 hours.
Love this Museum so much and visit every school holiday. Free entry and so much to look at. Staff are all so sweet and kind. Best bit is they now have a Changing Places toilet making it truly accessible to those wheelchair users who cant stand to use the bathroom. Thank City Museum for adding this. Its makes the world of difference to our family.
Six of us. Four kids two adults. Over three floors. Nice rear outdoor space. Small cafe didn't use. A good display of Portsmouth history and social change. Some. Great Sherlock Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brilliant. Plus it's free. Parking possible but maybe expect to use off Street so have change ready. Good gift shop too. A new visit for this year and it was great. Free to get in. The age was great and lots for the kids to touch and play with. Easter new visit. Great value.
Considering this place is free, easily one of the best museums for miles. To start with, the building itself is beautiful. The Victorian style is similar to the National History Museum in London and is very impressive. The staff are incredibly helpful. The Sherlock Holmes museum was my main focus and it had a huge range of detailed exhibits. The modern art exhibits were impressive as well. It was really interesting following the museum through and seeing the Portsmouth homes through the ages. A lovely place to visit. Probably minimum of one hour but ideally 2-3 hours to see everything.
A museum which appears to be a work in progress..... Could use more historical artifacts and information, though I did enjoy looking at old videos of Portsmouth . RE assistance dogs ... Staff require training re how to great a human with assistance dog. Management Could try putting up a notice that states SERVICE DOGS WELCOME .please have your dog ID Available for staff to view ..instead of saying your dog can't come in, they should be trained to say, " hello is that a service dog ? welcome.... As you show your dog ID...:
Warm welcome by staff with simple instructions on how to beat view the museum. Always felt the entrance is imposing, but well worth going. It's free and has some unique exhibits. Go all the way up to see some Pompey football items. Arrived too late to use the cafe. Will be back another time. Also has some lovely grounds with kids play area. Was very quiet. All free with shop.
Made my first visit today - an excellent museum plus cafe and shop. A fascinating museum about a fascinating city. Well worth a visit!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
