A place worth visiting. It was very interesting and informative, both for me and for my 10-year-old child. The presented exhibits and a visit to the tank carrier are incredible and leave a fascinating impression. The accompanying videos are very interesting and meaningful. The art gallery deserves special attention. The canvases presented in it are masterpieces. I recommend it for visiting .
Excellent - I have been intending to visit for decades and finally got around to it yesterday. Absolutely fascinating and the relatively new LCT 7074 tank landing craft is the jewel in the crown. Well sign posted with fascinating history on display, enthusiastic volunteers and a good shop and cafe - it's very highly recommended.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
As others said, amazing museum with something for all the family. Brilliant insights into the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of the servicemen of all nationalities. For me, the lighting of some of the displays could have been more focused or brighter, but that's just a personal preference. The jewel in the crown for me was the incredible Overlord Embroidery. 83m long! Fabulous work in all the colours of the rainbow. My husband loved the Landing craft outside. Great for mobility restricted persons and the road parking outside is free for disabled badge holders, not sure if it's the same in the car park also. A great visit
We came here for a father's day visit. Highly recommend. Was a great visit for the whole family. Definitely recommend asking for the 'resist' pack when you get your tickets. Great pack where you have to solve clues around the exhibits including using an ultraviolet torch. The kids loved solving the clues.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Having not visited this since I was probably younger than my own teenage children, we decided to visit on a trip to Southsea. The museum was fantastically set up. We started with a tour of the Landing Craft Tank a short distance away - note of you are going to visit it'll require a short walk in the elements although the weather was fine on our visit. Aside from the outside attraction, the museum is split into two halves, the main museum and then the Overlord Embroidery Display. There is an audio guide, which is in the form of a headset and handset. You select the numbers relevant to the section you are in. My partner in particular found this useful as she can find lots of reading quite taxing dyslexia, and she found she took a lot more information in. Our boys opted for no audio guide and still found the museum held their interest. There were younger children too whose interest was held for long enough, although I wouldn't say this museum is particularly aimed at them. We didn't use the cafe, but it is conventional situated between the two 'halves' of the museum. The staff were friendly and helpful and it was nice to see the museum as a whole very busy. If you are in the area it is worth paying a visit.
A gem of a museum in Portsmouth for anyone interested in World War II and more specifically the history of Operation Overload and D-Day. Portsmouth is where thousands of landing craft and soldiers departed for the arduous journey across the English Channel. Located outside is LCT 7074 one of the vessels that made the trip. It's well worth taking the time to explore. Inside, the museum is full of memorabilia and stories featuring people and objects that help to tell the story of D-Day. One of my favorite sections was the story about Gustav the pigeon who bought the first reports of the landings in Normandy back to the British mainland. The Overlord Embroidery is over 80 meters long and consists of 34 embroidered panels. It's a phenomenal piece of art and displays the story of the Normandy Landings in wonderful detail.
Absolute fantastic experience well worth the price of the tickets, all the family really enjoyed it. To my daughters it was a bit of an emotional shock to hear what happened and to see the equipment and hear the stories. Just a tip don't rush around it makes you think about the men risking their lives Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
A brilliant and informative museum which hit the perfect tone for such a sensitive subject. Much has been made of D-Day on this, the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, and some celebrations rather than honour the event and those that took part sail very close to the accusations of "glorifying" the war or appearing insincere in telling the story of that horrendous time. Not so at the D-Day museum. In a city rich with military history stretching back centuries, the D-Day Story museum hits the note perfectly with an enviable collection of artifacts from real people, civilians and military alike, who were there. Notebooks from serving soldiers and airmen, clothing from the time, videos and audio from both service personnel and those they left at home make for a beautiful and humbling experience. The tank landing craft outside forms the most tactile part of this exhibition, and is very informative, covering as much or as little as you would like to know about the life of the crews and "passengers" who sailed out to France on the 6th June 1944. The highlight, though, has to be the incredible tapestry. Stunningly beautiful, intricate and thoughtfully displayed in an alcoved viewing gallery to really take you in to the tapestry, it is well worth a visit. Coupled with friendly, knowledgeable staff, a well stocked cafe and gift shop, I'm delighted that annual tickets are available as we will definitely be back to explore more of this amazing collection.
Great exhibit which can be done in 2-3 hours . The inclusion of being able to walk in and around an actual landing craft makes the experience more unique. Staff were great and offered audio guides to anyone.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Fantastic day out - so much detail and excellent presentation - took us 3 hours in Museum with further hour on board the Landing Craft a MUST BIG shout out for the Volunteer Team at the Museum itself and at the Landing Craft - they were all just so informed and helpful. The Cafe served nice light meals and the Cappuccino £3.50 was excellent in its tall glass mug! Great loos too! The ticket & sticker allows you to come & go all day so it's nice to explore the Tudor Fort adjacent, grab a beer in to Courtyard then take the air overlooking the crossing to the Isle of Wight before going back in to see the exhibit again The D Day Embroidery is nothing short of STUNNING and a must see alone. We were just amazed how big it was and totally perfect - even Piper Bill Millen's Beret is a Green Beret!! Bravo. Great visit - thanks Observation - In some of the display cases the explanation written words explaining the objects are beyond reading glasses focal length!! ie they are too far away to read!! Please please look at this basic error for very mature visitors.
