Story

Celebrating quality produce from land and sea.

New proprietors Alex and Oliver Burnside reopened the doors of The Plough and Sail in April 2012. The twin brothers aim to offer their customers delicious food and drink, a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and exceptional service. Chef Oliver has a passion for quality, seasonal food, using produce from his local suppliers wherever possible and front-of-house Alex enjoys serving customers a range of draught lagers and ales, soft drinks and a fantastic wine list.

Whether you choose a light, casual meal or a formal dinner in our restaurant, the menus feature traditional favourites, the best of modern British cuisine and dishes influenced from around the world. Every dish is cooked and presented with flair and imagination and is accompanied by a superb wine list.

The Plough and Sail comprises of a spacious restaurant, a cosy bar and an intimate balcony area, perfect for private parties. There is also seating at the front of the pub and a courtyard area at the back where warm summer evenings and lazy Sundays can be enjoyed. We hope to see you soon!

Lovely Freehouse with a good selection of local ales. Specials menu I assumed item changes, see photo for prices and dishes. I must add that the normal menu is just as good tbh...nLots of space, nice courtyard outside with dog watering and a few water refill area for walkers and bikers etc. price is what you'd expect for the area and location IMO. Not sure if a kids menu so m might be pricey for family with kids. The owners might correct this in the reviews, if not phone ahead.
Excellent food and ale. However, a typo on the menu stating the creamy mushroom and spinach tart was 'dairy free' turned out to be incorrect. Menu needs amending. When my wife had to make another choice under pressure, the staff could be heard in the kitchen voicing their exhasperstion! An otherwise 'good customer service' experience marred by a thoughtless member of waiting staff.
Went here for dinner with friends. The place has a nice ambience and the tables inside were roomy and we didn’t feel cramped at all. Service was great. The food was nice, but just a couple if small criticisms. I thought it was a little on the pricey side for the portion sizes we received. The ladies had beef cheeks which, while tasty, were dry. I had lamb which very tasty but only a small piece of meat. We did enjoy the experience overall.
Excellent friendly service and good menu choices. They were easy about accommodating my gluten free diet.nnI enjoyed my salad but my husband was a little disappointed with portion size of his sides. We suspected the kitchen had run out!nnIt wasn't the best value meal we've had all week of eating out here locally but it was pretty good and certainly worth a visit if in the area.
We dined here yesterday for a birthday lunch. Overall the experience was underwhelming.nnIs it just me or are basic standards in pub/restaurants all but non-existent these days?nChefs seem to have lost all pride in what there permitting to be sent out of the kitchens, and it's more than evident that management are simply not thinking from the diners point of view.nPerhaps this is all compounded by the great British refusal to complain or a complete lack in their own food and dining standards.nnI don't like to complain either, but giving polite feedback really is necessary and we should all embrace doing it a bit more. Kitchens are busy, rush hours are busy, the people working to serve our food are human, things get missed... How on earth can they improve if we don't tell them. And let's not forget, we are paying for it, so there is nothing wrong with expecting quality over quantity.nnThis is my feedback and my only hope is that it helps to make the Plough and Sail a great place to eat not just an average one.nn- The room was uncomfortably cold. I had to keep my scarf on and numerous other diners had kept their coats onn- My coffee was served luke warm.n- The hummus starter is accompanied with one supermarket bought pitta bread.n- The hummus tasted strongly of olives not mentioned on the menu.n- No small plates with the starters making them awkward for sharing.n- Halloumi starter: luke warm, barely grilled.n- One of the main plates had a deep chip in the ceramic I should have actually sent this back immediately as it was a safety hazard, the same as a piece of broken glassbeing in your foodn- Uncomfortable chairs, especially for a seventy year old woman.n- wait staff with long hair not tied back basic hygienen- table right outside the toilets which smelled and offered an unsightly view for the diners facing that direction.n- A mint tea served in a significantly dirty glass.nnThis may seem like I'm being picky, but again these are basic things. We spent a lot of money yesterday, the details count.nnA redeeming and important quality to finish off with is that all of the staff who served us were polite and very accomodating. Happy to reseat us albeit it to the toilet table which allowed the birthday guest to be much more comfortable.nnI wouldn't recommend the Plough and Sail based on our experience, but it has the potential to be a great place for people to eat out, special occasions or not.nnPerhaps it might up it's game in the future.
