This a beautiful - and free - museum. There are so many things to see. It is one of my favourite places, even with just a couple of hours to kill, and I have been there many times before. I recently went to see the Francis Bacon exhibition. A fantastic selection of some of his best paintings, coming from all over the world, private and museum's collections. This is a highly recommended, accessible place to go if you are in the area.
The National Portrait Gallery in London is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Located just steps away from Trafalgar Square, this gallery is home to an impressive collection of portraits, spanning centuries of British history. It beautifully weaves together art, culture, and history, allowing visitors to explore the stories behind some of the most influential figures in British history—ranging from royalty and literary greats to contemporary icons. The gallery is well-organized, making it easy to navigate through different eras, each section offering a window into the life and times of its subjects. The curated exhibitions often provide fresh perspectives on familiar figures, while the permanent collection is a treasure trove that includes famous works like the portraits of Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I, and contemporary figures like David Hockney. The recently renovated spaces add a modern touch, yet the gallery retains its classic charm. The staff is knowledgeable and approachable, providing insights into the artworks and their historical contexts. Additionally, the gallery’s café and gift shop offer a pleasant break during your visit, with quality food and unique art-inspired souvenirs. Overall, the National Portrait Gallery offers a rich cultural experience, making it a great destination for anyone interested in art and history. It’s a place where the past and present converge, offering inspiration and insight into Britain’s diverse heritage.
Fantastic museum with portraits from the renaissance to modern times. I enjoyed the special exhibition on portraits by Francis Bacon 1909-1992, which includes some of his greatest paintings. The permanent collection offers many discoveries and some outstanding portraits by the likes of John Singer Sargent and David Hockney, to mention just two of the many brilliant artists.
Entrance is free but they request a 5 euro donation upon entering. The building is multiple floors with many portraits. If you get in line for the national gallery you're in the wrong place, it is located in the back. I thought there would be more photography, but they have a mixture of paintings, photography and sculptures. My favorite part of the gallery was the contemporary portraits which you can vote on for best viewers choice. The oddest thing is the facial sculpture that is refrigerated as it is made from the artists own bodily fluids. Overall, cool experience! Would recommend stopping by!
A must visit gallery, a beautiful collection of portraits from different eras and styles, classical pieces and modern too. A three story building, you will need at least two hours to finish the whole gallery. The National portrait gallery is so inspiring, thoughtful and offers this beautiful experience for free, photography is allowed. I highly recommend it.
The only problem was the very unhelpful staff. Doorman didn't even say a word, no greeting, inside the bag search staff were fine but the lady on the counter had a couldn't be bothered attitude, such a shame as its a brilliant place to visit. Very busy, can't bring in your own food or drink, very expensive to buy. However fantastic experience...
Very well put together and everything looking immaculate. Will definitely try The Cafe next time as today was too crowded. I advise you to come over during the week, it would be easier to see the portraits among fewer people.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
The National Portrait Gallery in London showcases an impressive collection of portraits, spanning from Tudor royalty to modern icons. It’s a perfect blend of history and art, offering free entry and a central location, making it a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts. During the school holidays they always have fantastic arts & crafts sessions for children. Always book in advance.
A great experience. We had booked for the Van Gogh experience, which was incredible. Just as good, though, is the National Gallery itself. Wonderful painters from the Masters.
This place is definitely worth a visit. You can immerse yourself in history and imagine what these people might have looked like in real life. They were probably painted to appear more attractive than they actually were. There’s also a good restaurant on the top floor.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
