Story

The Photographers' Gallery was founded in London’s Covent Garden in 1971 and was the first public gallery in the UK dedicated to the medium.

Over the years it has introduced such international photographers as Juergen Teller, Robert Capa, Sebastião Salgado, Andreas Gursky and Taryn Simon to British audiences, whilst championing the work of home based practitioners including Martin Parr, Zineb Sedira, Nick Knight and Corinne Day.

In May 2012, after an ambitious two-year redevelopment to offer new and enhanced spaces for exhibitions, learning, retail and social activities, The Photographers’ Gallery re-opened in its new home in Ramillies Street, Soho, London.

It continues to present a diverse and critically acclaimed public-programme of exhibitions, events, talks, workshops and courses that encourage deeper engagement with, and learning through the photographic medium.

If you love photography and books, come here! Buy your tickets online as it's cheaper than at the door - £10 v £8.50. The stories of the photographers in the current exhibition were more impressive than the actual pics imo, but the forest of images was stunning. The bookshop in the basement was absolutely adorable and a true gem. It's an off the beaten track unexpected surprise to discover this place, another wonder of London! It's a small venue just off Oxford Street which if you can avoid this time of year, will improve your mood, as it is sooooo slow with the crowds. :p
The exhibition of pictures taken by the Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia are striking evidence of her incessant work to document what was happening in Sicily in the 70s, an era in which the Mafia was a parallel state within a state, where politicians and magistrates were executed ruthlessly and the families were seeing every day acts of violence, even torture, inflicted on their relatives, children included. This body of work was published in the newspaper called L’ora, a local paper in Palermo, and the images are showing the reality of the daily traumas and little boys of the Sicilian people. They are incredible pictures, in some of them is difficult to refrain from crying or despair, such is the unavoidable, emotional response of any observer that has a conscience once they realise what they are seeing is political and not merely esthetic. Each and every image demands attention, and makes you want to look at it again and again to comprehend the bestiality of what was happening. It is a must see, but beware : those images will stay with you.
One of the finest photography exhibition venues in the world!!! A National Treasure in every sense! I got a sneak peek of two incredible exhibitions that are opening soon and I can unequivocally say that they were masterpieces in both conception and installation! Even if you have little interest in photography, this is an extraordinary "must see" place to visit while in London. I encourage everyone to become a supporting member and support this fabulous public institution!
This is an outstanding venue ; I’ve been coming here for ten years at least. Whenever I see an exhibition that interests me I’ll do my best to come and see it. I always walk out of here inspired to make photos. The bookshop and cafe are also lovely. Please try and support this wonderful place.Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedYes
I loved it. Spectacular, and it's.just off Oxford Street. First time I have been there and wish I had known about it long ago. In addition to the galleries of photos and videos, they have an excellent Cafe and shop with a huge selection of both work from artists on display as well as others. Don't see what you are looking for - they can arrange introductions and access to private collections. You can also get a membership for excellent discounts, and their online shop and catalog is first class. Very highly recommended!
I’ve been visiting since it’s early inception and always loved it. This space is so good for exhibiting photography amazingly calm next to the chaos of Oxford Street. The bookshop is worth a visit on its own. Currently the Deutsche Borse is showing and many of the exhibits are both beautiful and moving. Better still oldies get a discount!
I can't believe I have never visited before, what an amazing Gallery. We visited early on a Friday and it was not too busy and we were about to view all the exhibitions in a relaxing way. The current Letizia Battaglia exhibition is highly recommended and I will definitely be back to view it again. I had purchased their membership+guest option before arrival which includes access to all the exhibitions but if you are not a member you may need to buy a ticket for some of the exhibitions.
Cost £7 entry and staff are helpful. Started at top floor and worked down. Top two floors were exhibiting for a photography award. Some ok stuff on show but breezed through those floors. Next floor down had some photography books you could browse…fine but the rest of the floor was an empty studio. Finally on 2nd floor got to the part worth seeing. They had an exhibition of Bert Hardy’s photography which was eclectic but universally brilliant. Some of the best photography I’ve ever seen and I could spend quite a while looking at each photo. If that exhibition wasn’t on I wouldn’t recommend to anyone but it is worth seeing. There’s a shop downstairs if you fancy buying any prints and it sells all sorts for aspiring photographers.
Brilliant experience at this gallery. I was super early for my showing almost 2 hours but there was somewhere warm to wait in the cold. The internet signal was terrible, not sure if that was intentional or just a London wide problem. I did not eat at the café as the event was setup in the café space. The Gallery has fantastic work to cater to all tastes and an outdoor exhibition too. I highly recommend a visit.
Lovely gallery. First time I've been to this version... the Daidō Moriyama exhibition was mostly very well designed. The curators had tried hard to make the space more immersive. Some of the rooms were a bit over the top and distracted from the simplicity of the work. But I left feeling I had been very Moriyamad!!!
