The Laing Art Gallery features an impressive mix of British art, from classic oil paintings to contemporary exhibitions. Housed in a charming Edwardian building, the gallery offers well-curated and informative displays. Admission is free, and the friendly staff make your visit even better. There’s also a cosy café to relax in after exploring the art, and a playroom for kids, which closes at 15:30 for cleaning. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy art in the heart of Newcastle.
Excellent provincial art gallery my favourite even better than the Walker in Liverpool even if it is smaller. It hosts some very good exhibitions including the latest which is devoted to Turner and which centres of The Fighting Temeraire. The building itself is superb and well worth visiting for the murals alone. A fine complement to a great British city.
Lovely art gallery in the centre of Newcastle. The exhibits are well thought through - particularly the Turner exhibit for summer 2024. They have made a real effort to be accessible for all: for example, there is a beautiful stained glass window on the main staircase with a 3D relief opposite describing the main panels in braille.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNo
Newcastle has this beautiful art gallery, 10 minutes walk from the train station. This Lovely building is about to celebrate the works of J.w.Turner from the 1st of may. The gallery is displaying the "the fightingTimeraire" along with other works.Just £5 to view this famous painting. The gallery has three rooms, including the photography of the time when shipbuilding what's the dominant employer. Take an hour out, and visit this beautiful gallery, the main part of the buildings free.
A relatively small, lovely art gallery in the centre of Newcastle. Easy to digest, and with some really interesting and beautiful pieces. I went for the Turner exhibit which was well worth the entrance fee, but the rest of the gallery is free and definitely worth an hour or so of exploring.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Pleasant museum in the heart of the city. An unusual layout but full of varying interesting pieces throughout. Seems popular with locals and non locals like myself so that's a great positive.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Some good collection and most luckily it happened to be the Turner exhibition. Absolute dream. Really nice staff.
Well worth a visit, I visited a touring Turner exhibition which was well worth the money and had a brilliant local history focus, but the permanent exhibitions are great too.
Maybe I was expecting more but I went because of the Edward Burne-Jones but I got the Turner exhibition which pushed much else out. I have nothing against the Temeraire and my photo is rubbish I blame the light as all were, but I do find his stetches uninspirational
If you want to see some oil paintings in Newcastle, this gallery is your best choice. They have two free floors and all the artwork they have is something they usually don’t change but they are not too bad. They have one room on the top floor that has seasonal art exhibits but I heard they are not worth 7 pounds. I think it depends on the exhibition. The art shop is lovely but again their products are mostly generic, but some of the art books are very cool.
