King's Head Pub and Theatre

About

Legendary Upper Street Pub. We've got real ales, British charcuterie & cheese, live music 'till late and Wednesday Pub Quiz!.

Story

Welcome to the King’s Head Theatre Pub! Located on the trendy and eclectic Upper Street in Islington we are best known for being the first theatre pub since Shakespearean times when the theatre was founded in 1970.

But while we are famous for our theatre in the back, at this Victorian pub our customers also enjoy great drinks in front of a roaring fire, see the images of the world’s famous stage faces and listen to some of the best live music Islington has to offer.

We serve a ‘British-tapas’ style menu of artisan cheeses and charcuterie, in addition to some cracking bar snacks perfect to take into the theatre.

We are open 7 days a week with a Wednesday pub quiz from 8:30pm and live music every Thursday to Sunday night starting from 9.30pm/10pm.With a late license until 2am on Friday & Saturday nights.

I do not know what to make of this pub. A 10 minute walk from Angel tube puts it in a good location. They only had one cask ale, a reasonably priced Youngs at £5.60. The pub oozes character whilst also having a somewhat cluttered air to it could be due to the pictures on the wall. The upstairs theatre has relocated a short distance away but they do have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. The dark ceiling and half wood panelled walls make it quite dark but this is offset by a gas fire giving a warm glow. There is limited exterior seating. On the one hand I feel that the pub needs a makeover but on the other hand it would lose its character. The table I sat at was quite sticky but the service was good. The toilet is accessed by a steepish staircase to the basement, it was bright but had a jaded look to it. This pub is full of contradictions, I recommend you visit as it is very different, you may love or hate it.
Reece the manager I believe offered exceptional service upon our visit. Given were not from the area it was so nice to be warm welcomed with a great service, honestly thought he owned this pub. Thanks again my friend, will definitely be paying this boozer another visit if all his staff has his attitude. Well done.Service: 5/5
Nice pub! Kaela was friendly and helpful. Particularly with me being on crutches - she helped me access the disabled toilet when needed, despite having a busy bar. Good people, great beer and friendly vibes.
This pub is great!!! They do nice cocktails, staff were SUPER friendly and recommended we try their new cheese and charcuterie board, which we did and it did not disappoint! Overall a great experience. Will definitely be back.
Good Islington pub on Upper Street about 10 minutes walk to either Highbury and Islington or Angel tube station. Only one cask beer on handpump when I visited. Some outdoor seating on the pavement at the front. Until July 2023, the pub housed a famous theatre which has now moved to the nearby Islington Square.
Terrific atmosphere at the kings head, the service from Layla and Grant was nothing short of superb. Cracking little pub 10/10.Service: 5/5
The place was very lively and the mood was great i loved how small the place was . Staff were super friendly especially keala eventhough she was feeling under the weather she talked and served us with a big smile on her face and waved us goodbye when we left . Would totally recommend Service: 5/5
Nice traditional style pub. I was there after the Euro 24 semi final, which England won, so hard to comment on the typical atmoshere. The lady serving was very nice.Service: 5/5
Cozy pub. Once, they actually used the fireplace inside, created a really nice atmosphere. Beer is good. Nice place to enjoy a beer with friends.
Having read other reviews praising the food, we planned an evening to eat here before going to the adjacent theatre. When we arrived we were told they don't do food, they only have Scotch Eggs! Fortunately we found another local pub, The Bull and had good food and drinks.Food: 1/5
