Animals In War Memorial

Story

The Animals in War Memorial is a war memorial in Hyde Park, London. It is located on Park Lane, at the junction with Upper Brook Street, on the eastern edge of the park. The memorial was designed by English sculptor David Backhouse to commemorate the countless animals that have served and died under British military command throughout history. It was unveiled in November 2004 by Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.HistoryThe memorial was inspired by Jilly Cooper's book Animals in War, and was made possible by a specially created fund of £1.4 million from public donations of which Cooper was a co-trustee. The memorial consists of a 55 ft by 58 ft (16.8 m by 17.7 m) curved Portland stone wall: the symbolic arena of war, emblazoned with images of various struggling animals, along with two heavily laden bronze mules progressing up the stairs of the monument, and a bronze horse and bronze dog beyond it looking into the distance. The Animals in War Memorial was officially opened on 24 November 2004 by Anne, Princess Royal. On May 27 2013, it was one of two London war memorials vandalised on the same night. The word 'Islam' was spray-painted on it causing £2,766 in damage and the nearby RAF Bomber Command Memorial causing £6,500 in damage. A 31-year-old London man later admitted to vandalising the memorials. The man was charged for a total of 94 vandalism and destruction of property offences carried out over several weeks against homes, cars, memorials and a church causing a total of £56,909 in damage.

As with all war memorials, they are there to make us think of the utter futility and waste of lives that wars bring, be they humans or animals. The animals had no choice. Unfortunately, neither did the conscripted soldiers.
This monument is a powerful and moving tribute to all the animals that served, suffered and died alongside the British, Commonwealth and Allied forces in the wars and conflicts of the 20th century. constructed in Portland stone and cast bronze, 58ftwide and 55ft deep, the memorial has a strong visual impact, both from distant and close views.
This Animal War Memorial was designed by English sculptor David Backhouse. There were countless of animals that have served and died under Bristish military command in the war, the memorial is so meaningful and they also part of the creatures on the earth.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
All memorials will always get 5* this one has had so much detail and thought put into it I really like the design and it really gets you thinking and the words THEY HAD NO CHOICE is something that gets you and remember about this memorial. It's really worth a visit and it's nice to see something in memorial for the animals in the war.
Moving tribute to animals that have served, suffered and died in wars: Horses, donkeys, mules and camels carried food, water, ammunition and medical supplies to men at the front, and dogs and pigeons carried messages. Canaries were used to detect poisonous gas, and cats and dogs were trained to hunt rats in the trenches.
A panoramic depiction incorporating a massive curved Portland stone wall, two pack-mules, a horse and dog, in single file - all volunteers contributing their bit to war. Located near Brook Gate on the central reservation between Park Lane and Hyde Park. Attributed to David Backhouse in 2004. Heartfelt, monumental kitsch partly financed by public contribution. Respecting and commemorating all animals killed in wartime. There be no dearth of statues, monuments, arches, fountains and distractions in the Hyde Park precinct: this memorial a commendable diversion.
You would have to be unbelievably hard hearted and without feelings not to be touched by this lovely memorial to the Animals who served the British people and their Allies over the centuries. This in a small way is a fitting tribute to their memory. Well worth a visit and some contemplation.
Gorgeous monument commemorating the sacrifice of animals, large and small, employed by British and Commonwealth forces during the Great War. The memorial is situated on a traffic island to the North-East of Hyde Park, not too far from Marble Arch and Speaker's Corner. Sadly ignored by the majority of people who walk past it, it is a stunning work of art that deserves to be appreciated by us all.
A beautiful memorial for the animals lost in war
Nice that the animals that served their servicemen in WW2 have been given their own memorial. Not far from Marble Arch on Park Lane this memorial includes some nice stone work and statues or the animals used in conflict. Nicely done.
