James Dahl Indian

About

Being a recent addition to the vast list of eateries Birmingham has to offer, James Dahl distinguishes itself with bona fide, light, and refined dishes combined with a deliberately understated décor and service which strives for perfection.

Story

Serving upscale Indian dishes from its sophisticated location inside The Arcadian on Digbeth’s Hurst Street, James Dahl Indian is a dining destination that will change the way you look at Indian cuisine. Utilising all-natural ingredients, seasonal produce and healthy cooking techniques, James Dahl Indian offers dishes that are light and fresh, a stark contrast to the usual heavy, albeit delicious, specialities we’ve come to associate with the Indian kitchen.

Despite a very recent opening (2016), James Dahl Restaurant is already a huge success winning an accolade in the 'English Curry Awards,' so be sure to book in advance to secure a table.

Having been to many Indian restaurants, James Dahl lacked the most simplest of things such as manners. We didn’t get a warm welcome, not even a smile. Throughout the night it seemed as though the manager and his waiters were just on a mission to take our order, our money and to leave ASAP. At one point the manager told us we have an hour left and that we’d have to leave, even though we wasn’t told this when booking over the phone. Overall the service was terrible and I’m disappointed because the food was actually nice and the place had potential. The attitude from the manager was horrid, none of us felt he was friendly at all and just wanted our money. However, must give credit where credit was due. One waiter (I wish I had got his name) was very friendly and helpful, I guess the manager had ruined the atmosphere for us. Unfortunately due to the lack of service and professionalism, we won’t be returning.

Having eaten in a lot of Indian restaurants throughout the UK, this has got to be one of the best! From the service and ambience to the food, everything was spot on! Recommend the special starter of chicken breast cooked in honey! Highly recommend.

Got to agree with most of the reviews, the food was very good. A prawn Puri to start and a lamb jalfrezi with mushroom pilau all washed down (as is traditional) with a LARGE cobra. Very recommended. It's smaller inside than expected, hence the "maximum time" limit to how long they want you to stay. I didn't book, but they squeezed me in and continued to squeeze people in. Nice atmosphere, the staff could try to be a bit more engaging, but all in all. Give it a try.

In reviewing this establishment, whilst extremely easy to do so, by virtue of their exceptionally high standards in every area - quality of food, customer service, ambience etc - it is extremely difficult to remove them from the category of "Indian Restaurants" . Yes, they are in a business category or directory sense, but as a regular diner i would like to emphasise they are a Restaurant that specialises in Indian Cuisine. There is a very big difference and although in the very tiny UK wide Premier League of all Restaurants, regardless of cuisine purveyed, James Dahl without doubt qualify for the Champions League as the "Bookies odds-on favourite". Attention to detail by the Ownership is always maintained, treatment of Customers as individuals is given as standard, but received as being made special, along with an equally tailored dish for your own request. Finally, whilst all Staff perform to "International Team" levels, should you have the good fortune to be served by - or indeed ask for - Misba, you really will benefit from a Waiter that along with the obvious front of house service requirements, has a knowledge of dishes to Head Chef standard, that will perfect your visit. Yours gratefully and see you soon, Phillip Cooper.
