Ilkley Toy Museum

Story

Ilkley Toy Museum in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, houses a private collection of toys dating from 350 BC to modern times, and is open to the public, schools, and groups.GalleriesGround floor dolls' houses galleryAt the back is a 1940s English working model fairground automaton, which goes into action when one purchases a token and puts it in the slot placed under the window. See it working here. There is also a Hornby clockwork train lift.In this gallery is a large display of furnished dolls' houses, mainly Victorian, and mainly from Germany and England. They include Stafford House (1830) (see image), possibly named after Lancaster House, which was then a topical subject, being still in the process of building. There is an unusual dolls' house of Georgian appearance, with great, twisted pillars at the front, and Georgian furnishings and figures. Some of these dolls' houses are miniature shop displays, with minuscule and delicate objects on counters and shelves. There is thin glassware; there are miniature dolls; there is a tiny shopkeeper with little steel needles, holding real knitting. Tiny modern pieces of delicate crochet or tatting hang in some of these little shops as cloths and bags. The display includes a pet shop (see image) and butcher's shop (see image).

This was a fascinating museum to visit with my friend, where we entered past a large policeman doll and were welcomed by a very friendly staff member for a price of only £3.50! Downstairs has many interesting toys on show, including houses, mini railways and amusement areas, the latter of which featured a replica fairground that was activatable via a token that the staff member gave us. The fairground was amusing and finding our way upstairs was easy via the signs, accompanied by frames along the way that displayed numerous toys. In the area, we enjoyed looking at the board games, film memorabilia, toy animals and bears - the last one really felt nostalgic since I remembered seeing these as a little kid here!
Loved it! We didn't have children with us, but could still appreciate this lovingly created museum for the nostalgia & memories it brought back. The dolls' houses are amazing - some old & rare. This is privately run - thank goodness for people like this who share their passions. Not a rip-off entry fee, either.
A MUST PLACE TO VISIT for an hour ither with children or NOT, brought back a lot of good memories, quite a few vintage dolls houses from Germany from the 1820, LOOK FOR THE SMALL TEDDY BEAR he's on the second floor in the dolls section, HE HAS A VERRY Sad written true story, about a boy I'm not going to say any more as not to spoil it, there's some toys that I don't rember enjoy the visit
Cute little museum. Friendly staff. Two floors. Nics collection.
What a fascinating place! While it's small, there's a lot packed into the three rooms, and the information given about the toys is presented in a really interesting way. You're also given a quiz sheet to fill in as you go round different ones depending on whether you're a little or big kid! which adds to the fun. The top floor isn't wheelchair accessible because of the nature of the building, but entrance is free to wheelchair users. A real hidden gem, and well worth a visit.
Firstly IT'S CASH ONLY and its not a free museum. The kids can do a quiz as they go round and they're lots of interesting facts about toys. There's also a colouring area. There were toys from Barbies to James Bond to childhood games, teddies and dolls! Definitely worth a visit.
Lovely exposition, lovely staff. This museum is brilliant for all family, even you haven't kids, it's very interesting to know about history of toys.
Haven’t been in about a decade since I was a kid, but if nothings changed it should still make for a nice day out. The staff were friendly and accommodating plus there’s alot to see. Must admit its probably best obviously for quite young kids. From what I remember there’s also some interactive displays which kept me occupied for far too long as a child.
Loved this! Very nostalgic and informative museum. The quiz sheets kept the kids entertained too!
Small but jammed packed with interesting exhibits
