Guildhall Art Gallery

About

A fine art collection spanning 400 years, including depictions of London, works by major Victorian artists, and the underground ruins of London's Roman Amphitheatre. The Gallery also runs a regular exhibition and events programme.

Story

Guildhall Art Gallery was established in 1886 as 'a Collection of Art Treasures worthy of the capital city'. The original building was destroyed during a severe air raid in 1941. In 1988, when the Gallery was being rebuilt on its original site, Museum of London archaeologists discovered the remains of London’s Roman Amphitheatre. The new building was redesigned to incorporate the underground Roman ruins and opened in 1999.

Very cool museum filled with Victorian era art and Roman history. The collection feels intimate, with lots of smaller rooms of carefully curated paintings. If you are looking for an art museum that's not too crowded, go here! The special exhibit was fantastic too Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Historical gem hidden in an urban jungle, with exhibitions depicting old and new London. Didn't know London has Roman amphitheatre built at some point after 47AD. Anne Desmet caleidoscope and Dali inspired vision of London celebrates London treasures. Peaceful place where to learn about London/UK history. Very friendly, polite and knowledgeable staff. On multiple levels accessible by lift.
What a gem. I was amazed at the wonderful collection of famous artists they have there. We also got a free guided tour which was very enjoyable. In the basement was the remains of a Roman Amphitheatre which has been cleverly portrayed in a theatrical scene
The weather was awfully warm yesterday so having a place to cool down while enjoying art was a smart choice. The place is not huge so you can easily see it in a few hours. The entrance is free and the security wards were incredibly friendly. It’s a nice free gallery, something different if you’ve already been to the most visited museums/galleries.
It’s free. The Guildhall Art Gallery in London is a remarkable blend of contemporary and historic design, centrally located and easily accessible. The gallery features an impressive collection of Victorian art, the unique remains of a Roman amphitheater, and rotating exhibitions, all within a serene and elegant setting. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, contributing to an excellent overall service. The gallery is very clean, well-maintained, and fully accessible, with free admission and additional amenities like guided tours, a gift shop, and a café. Visiting on a weekday morning is ideal to avoid crowds and take full advantage of the free guided tours. With its unique integration of Roman ruins and rich art collections, the Guildhall Art Gallery offers excellent value and is highly recommended for art and history enthusiasts. I rate it 9 out of 10.
I loved visiting this art gallery, it has everything you would want such as; paintings, statues, abstract artwork, amphitheatre, rich history with historical artifacts. Great facilities clean toilets, lifts and a cloakroom with lockers for £1 which is returned to you after use. It's small but, if you take your time and fully immerse yourself into the gallery your stay can be up to 1hour. The staff were talking quite loudly which was annoying because I couldn't fully relax, but not a big deal it didn't put me off.
What an interesting place that is! You would see some sculptures, loads of fascinating paintings and even a Roman amphitheater in the basement of the building. Entry is free and it is not different than any Italian art gallery, so definitely worth a visit!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
There's enough to see without it being overwhelming. The staff are great, we wandered around in a mostly deserted gallery and saw pictures, sculptures and a Roman amphitheater. It really is an undiscovered gem. Highly recommended.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Absolutely stunning museum with amazing pieces and entery is free! I came for the amphitheater which was lovely to see on it's own but stayed for the truly amazing art they have on exhibition. Staff was lovely and welcoming. Great way to spend an afternoon!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I thoroughly enjoyed the Guildhall Art Gallery, especially its stunning Victorian aesthetic. As a fan of Steampunk, I loved how the artwork and architecture captured that era's charm and grandeur.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
