Great lunch experience. Excellent value with the offer of a drink, sandwich and side for £8.85 or pub lunch classics from £6.95. Service was friendly and food served quickly. Everything we had was properly cooked and delicious.
Manor Parkn £6.60 Level HeadnnThe Golden Fleece sits on Capel Road, overlooking the southern edge of Wanstead Flats in East London. The nearest station is Manor Park on the Lizzie Line.nnBuilt by Watney’s in 1871, the pub grew with the area’s development after the railways arrived in the mid-19th century. It is now operated by Greene King.nnThis is a deceptively large traditional pub with two adjoining bars. The main bar has high ceilings, with the servery on the right-hand side. Just off it is a smaller snug bar with a fives board at the far end. At the back, there’s a carpeted dining area with plenty of tables and chairs.nnThe décor includes boarded and tiled floors, dark panelling, vintage photos, jokey slogans, branded chalkboards, a few fireplaces, and floral touches around the servery. At the rear and side is a sizeable beer garden with multiple benches and parasols.nnThe beer line-up will please most, with mainstream brews, craft options, and a couple of cask ales. I chose a pint of Level Head; it hit the spot, though the price felt high given it’s a Greene King brew. The food menu is extensive and features comfort-food dishes and pub classics. Fish and chips is reasonably priced at £13.45.nnWe arrived just after 1:30 pm on a Saturday lunchtime in August. I was with fellow pub enthusiast @pintandanotherone on a crawl of pubs in the area. The pub was busy at the front and quieter at the back, with plenty of people in the beer garden. The atmosphere was upbeat, and most punters were watching the Man City v Spurs game on the many screens. Service was on point; the team were friendly and courteous.nnAs chain pubs go, this is a good one. The architecture and the setting by Wanstead Flats make it a desirable place to visit. There was a warm local-pub feel, with friendly regulars and welcoming staff. My pint was a bit pricey, but the food is fair value, and there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Worth a look if you’re in the area.nnFollow @goldenfleecemanor for updates.nn 23rd August 2025nnIf you want to see all my pub reviews in one place, head to @londonpubmap on Instagram or Facebook.
The Golden Fleece offers a classic and dependable hospitality experience, combining a traditional setting with a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The venue feels comfortable and unpretentious, making it an easy choice for casual meals, social gatherings, or a quiet drink. Its layout encourages conversation, with a balance between open communal areas and more private seating.nnThe food menu focuses on familiar, well-executed dishes that prioritise comfort and consistency. Meals are hearty, clearly prepared with care, and served in generous portions. Rather than trying to be overly ambitious, the kitchen succeeds by doing the basics well, which adds to the venue’s overall appeal. The drinks selection is varied and reliable, offering something suitable for different tastes and occasions.nnService at the Golden Fleece is friendly and efficient, contributing significantly to the positive experience. Staff are approachable, attentive, and knowledgeable, creating an environment where guests feel genuinely welcome rather than rushed. The pace of service is well judged, allowing visitors to enjoy their time without pressure.nnOverall, the Golden Fleece stands out as a solid and trustworthy venue that delivers exactly what it promises. With its relaxed atmosphere, dependable food, and good service, it remains a strong choice for those looking for a comfortable and enjoyable place to spend time.
Great family pub very large. Huge beer garden with good play area for children. Varied menu good food at reasonable prices. Friendly staff. Clean pub. 2 sets of toilets.
Popped in to try to have a chat about the possibility of holding a wake here after a funeral at the nearby manor park crematorium. It was a Sunday afternoon and the pub garden was very busy as it was a sunny day. Drinks prices are reasonable we paid around £10 for a pint of lager and a diet coke. Food prices for a wake seem well priced and a good selection of food.
