The Fortune Theatre was the first West End theatre opened in London following the First World War. It might not have the size, comfort and grandeur of its compatriots, especially Theatre Royal Drury Lane right across from it, but it more than makes up for it with the shows it hosts. The seats are quite small and have limited legroom. I am fairly comfortable in them but have seen many others have to sit sideways or at least tuck their legs up tightly just to fit in. This is why, although I have so, so many beautiful memories in this theatre, I must take off a star. The Fortune is currently home to “Operation Mincemeat”, a comedy musical based on the famous World War II deception operation. Put your doubts aside; it is utterly magnificent stuff, and is now an Olivier-winning production. Please, please do not miss it if you are in the West End!
I thoroughly enjoyed The Woman in Black at the Fortune Theatre. The play follows Arthur Kipps, a solicitor haunted by his experience at Eel Marsh House and the mysterious Woman in Black. The clever structure, where Kipps shares his tale with a young actor, creates an eerie atmosphere that builds the suspense masterfully. The minimal set design, combined with effective lighting and sound, heightened the tension, making this production a gripping and atmospheric experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a chilling ghost story.
We saw Operation Mincemeat yesterday, which is an absolutely brilliant show. However, the enjoyment was severely curtailed by the seating. We sat in the Dress Circle and had literally no leg room. If one is over 5'5", you'll struggle to sit down. We will certainly avoid this venue in future.
Very small theatre, but that made for a really good experience, as it felt a lot more personal to the actors on stage. Small toilet in the upper circle, but there wasn't a bad queue at least for the men's, and it was very clean. Very pleasant experience.
Great theater where we saw the EXCELENT show "Operation Mincemeat". The one thing I would say is make sure to check your seats to look for obscured view as there are a few at this location. It was probably listed when i purchased, but i didn't notice an 'obstructed view' notice until i got the actual tickets themselves where the notice was prominently displayed. However that said we still enjoyed our time so much i didn't knock off a star.
Did not enjoy my visit which was a shame. Booked Operation Mincemeat but was in the Upper Gallery and view was restricted. Even more restricted due to the woman in front of me had big hair. Could not really see or hear very well. Lots of rustling with one person eating their snacks and constant whooping from the standing crowd marred the experience even more. Very little leg-room. Theatre operates a flat-rate fee on all seats, so next time will try and get seats in the stalls. Four minute walk from Covent Garden tube station.
I visited here in May 2024 to see Operation Mincemeat. It is one of the smaller theatres in London, so wherever you sit feels quite close to the stage, but also means your view is likely to be blocked by those in front, which meales the uniform pricing structure at each performace unfair.
MUST SEE OPERATION MINCEMEAT 5++ at this Lovely little theatre with the tiniest lobby/box office. All other facilities are similarly small but it has two bars. It somehow makes the experience feel great fun. The balcony seats are steeply raked but the view of the stage is good.
Lovely little theatre, intimate but well appointed. Plenty of bars which is good when you have limited time but I would recommend ordering your interval drinks in advance. Air-conditioning is good too. Great venue.
A horrible little theatre that would be a claustrophobic fire warden's nightmare. Do you enjoy having feeling in your knee caps? This is not the theatre for you! Unless you are a child or have dwarfism your legs will touch the seat in front. Also there seemed to be only one loo for gents which was actually inside the auditorium and situated right next to a bar. To top it off, the show Operation Mincemeat really wasn't all that although I'm not holding that against the theatre. It would take a show with exceptional reviews to get me back in this theatre, as shuffling through narrow corridors to then sit in discomfort for a few hours is not my idea of fun.
