A real gem, and a truly amazing place. They say the best things come in small packages and they must've been thinking about Fortune's when they said it. The shop itself is tiny and harks back to days gone by, but the quality of the kippers is outstanding or so I'm told - not a fan of kippers but I make a point of stopping by and getting some for my mum who loves them. If you love kippers, then get them from the only traditional smokehouse in Whitby, after all this one of the things Whitby is famous for.
Lovely throwback kipper smoker on a beautiful street in a beautiful place. The smoke house is normally open to have a look inside and the kippers are really tasty. Highly recommended.
Pretty much as authentic as it gets when it comes to traditional local produce. Many generations in the family with the lovely smoke house next to the shop. Just stand and admire / smell. The kippers are of course amazing, but if they have any left get some of the fabulous smoked kipper pate, some fresh bread from Bothams and wash it all down with a beer outside Abbey brewery. The side of smoked bacon in the picture can be bought in whole slabs from our little butcher at the end of Park Terrace in Whitby Hewinson's butchers.

Loved this place. Mackerel was beautifully smoked. A very unique taste. Recommend everyone should go who comes to Whitby.

Had Kippers from Fortunes for lunch today. I remember them from wheel I was much, much younger and they are still the best Kippers in world and at £4.80 a pair are still fantastic value. It is such a tiny little place that I think most people walk past it and never give it a second thought. In my opinion if you like kippers, even those fake ones you get from Iceland or Aldi. You will love these, genuine oak, beech and softwood hot smoked for eighteen hours, Kippers.
Authentic kipper smoker, i bought kippers and some pate here, the lady who served us was very helpful.
Worth a visit even just for the unique smell. Possibly the oldest smokehouse in the country. Kippers are delicious. Always buy 4 pair when visiting Whitby which provides me with 8 breakfasts over a couple of months.
Whitby and Fortunes kippers go together both exceptional. whenever we visit always bring home lots to freeze. Perfect start to your weekend but cook on the bbq. Loved them++ Back from Whitby a week now, Sunday morning my first Fortune s kipper for breakfast 11/10
