Ok... it's cold and the sea is wild, but the Magpie Café is warm and inviting on this second day of spring. Had a lovely pale ale - bottled... only disappointment. Extensive fish menu.... BUT I'm in Whitby.... So it has to be fish and chips and a portion of mushy peas. I ordered the haddock (small). The batter is crisp, haddock flakes as you cut into encased fish. The chip are 'proper' chips - freshly cooked and not out of the freezer. Mushy peas with a drop of tom sauce... well say no more... on a cold 'Spring' night in Whitby.... I'm in paradise - what's not to like about Whitby in the early wintry spring - thanks 4 nice evening

The Magpie is coming up to its 100th birthday but we should remember that world history would have been very different if it was older. If this restaurant was here when James Cook lived in Whitby then he would have never left, the course of human history altered irrevocably. (Australians take note) The family-run Magpie does everything right, from their light and tasty cod and chips to their heavenly sticky toffee pudding. Many have said it’s the best fish restaurant in the UK, I contend that it’s the best fish restaurant in the world.

It was Saturday afternoon around 2pm when we were there. It took over 15 minutes for our small cod and chips to arrive. All waitresses were very nice, but the cod quality is defiantly exaggerated by both reviewers and locals especially that it's comparatively too pricey, £12 for 250g cod and chips. I had tastier and bigger portions with the same price or half of it. The place is indeed bustling with people, so don't be surprised when a table right next to you gives you looks after ears. However, the place does have a very nice view of the church and port if you sit by the window and is very well maintained after it closed down for 8 months due to the fire.

Very busy but when we got our food we realized why, portions are great, the fish was cooked perfectly and tasted great. The price was a little more than we were planning on paying for food but it was worth it. To say how busy it was the service was brilliant and they were lovely too.

Don't worry if there's a queue at the door - you'll soon be in and seated, ready for the finest fishy feast anywhere. We missed them so much after the fire closure last year that we organised a special visit from the west coast! Yes, that good!
