We heard that the Golden Fleece was haunted and we wanted to visit for ourselves! Luckily when We arrived there were a few tables available as York was very busy the day that we visited. The Staff were very welcoming and friendly. We ordered two Chicken Wraps with fries which was served very quick and tasted nice. The atmosphere was great too. Unfortunately we didn't see any of the ghosts that haunt the pub but we did see the skeleton dressed as the Easter bunny sat at the bar! which was a great touch for Easter. We will definitely return on our next visit to York.
Absolutely will be back again! Currently staying in a letting room upstairs and it's lovely, beautiful big bathroom. Warm welcome, good drink selection including good real ale, didn't try the food but there was only empty plates being collected. Live music every night, couldn't ask for more!
I don't know about haunted, but the beer they have on tap is brilliant. The bar staff are friendly & welcoming, and to be honest you can't beat it for atmosphere. Was a brilliant if unplanned visit for a quick pint. A must for a beer if you are in York.
We popped in for a evening meal. There is plenty of seating to choose from. The staff were polite and friendly. Food was great with a good menu. Definitely worth a visit if you like a pub with a great atmosphere. There is a beer garden too.
Lovely little pub. Table not cleaned though. we were in there with our 2 VERY well behaved daughters 10, 13 years, and were told, after buying drinks, that children had to leave by “8.30”. It was 8.15 at the time! I have absolutely no problem with this rule, but absolutely NO SIGN UP, so how is one to know?!!!Service: 2/5
What an amazing pub! The building is totally crooked. Totally an experience. Food was pub average, both in price and quality. Service was great! Worth visiting for lunch or dinner. I didn't visit the hotel part.
Good honest pub - really pleased it’s not been “wine-barred” like a lot of places. Old creaky floorboards and good beer. Warm and welcoming staff. Great music. Perfect location to explore York - looking straight down the shambles. Hearty breakfast. Room decoration is a little old - don’t expect 5 star marble. But it is definitely in keeping with the vibe. Based on the pub’s reputation I did approach sleeping the night with some trepidation. Slightly embarrassed to admit I did see and hear some things I couldn’t explain - assume it was my mind playing tricks on me but… I saw an ephemeral whisp of smoke in the stairwell, and twice there was a very unnerving laugh directly in my ear whilst trying to sleep.. had to pull the duvet up after that! The bed did move but I’m pretty sure that was just a wonky floorboard adjusting as the heating came on. Fun stay - recommend.
Very busy historic pub, selling mediocre beers! Vast difference in quality of the beer from the front good to rear bar poor especially on the Old peculiar... Non to poor seating but, there was a good atmosphere on our visit! Toilets stink of piss & the place needs a deep clean!Service: 3/5
Went here because it's supposed to be the most haunted pub, probably why most people come here. Walking down the corridor past the gents someone came out of the toilets, the smell when the door was opened was unbelievable. The pub itself inside looked filthy, so many nice pubs in York give this one a miss, I wish I had.
We loved everything about our stay here. The room was extremely comfortable and well equipped with absolutely everything one could possibly need and every staff member we met was perfectly lovely and helpful. We were very surprised at just how peaceful and quiet it was in the room considering this is right in the city centre and above a busy pub! We also had a delicious evening meal in the bar. For the most haunted pub in York, we both had an extremely good night sleep which made us both laugh the next morning!
