What a great pub with a fantastic spacious beer garden & gorgeous views. Fantastic Plant-based vegan options just need to add a vegan banofee pie to the desert menu ; & excellent selection of local beers & ales. Welcoming, friendly & helpful staff. Booking is recommended as it does get quite busy, especially on weekends.
I reviewed this pub 4 years ago. It’s now under new management and is quite transformed so I’ve deleted my old review. The pub has been transformed inside and out. The interior is light modern and airy and there’s now a large marquee in the garden. The food is imaginative and excellent - though we thought a bit more thought seem to go into the starters than the main courses. The servings are generous and we had no room for dessert. There is an excellent selection of draught ales and cider and a good wine list. The pub has become justifiably very popular and booking ahead is essential. The staff were lovely and friendly too.
Visited on a Friday lunchtime 8/4/2022. The recently updated bar area is now the restaurant with table service. Lunch was very good with a good pub menu. There's a good selection of local and guest ales on the pumps. The new outdoor bar and kitchen will work well in the summer months with the usual walkers from Butts brow and the downs. Was nice to speak with the owner over lunch which added a personal touch.
Great pub, fantastic location and good menu If you could build a beer garden… This is a great spot, with a fantastic view. We arrived at just before 7pm on a sunny day. Perfect. We both had the tofu style fish and chips. Me + the pickles. Don’t knock it till your try it!
Lovely setting, amazing food & great service. Happened to be sunny out so that enhanced the experience but not needed as everything was so nice. Food was A*, all the staff were so sweet and really helpful! What a find !
Eastbourne 05/06/22 Having been to the Eight Bells for the first time just a couple of months ago, we have now been back 3 times. A great example of what a pub should be… friendly, welcoming staff, good atmosphere and great pub food. A small menu which is a sign of locally sourced food and a great chef cooking everything perfectly. The chef even accommodated the special requirements of one of the people in my party, altering and cooking a separate dish that wasn’t even on the menu. It was important to them that we had a good meal and an enjoyable time… a quality lacking in most other pubs/restaurants. They even had treats for the new puppy in our family so even the dog had a great time! A shining example of what a meal out should be. We will definitely be back again. Thank you!! :
Outstanding food with a well thought out menu. They’ve just opened outdoor Barn and Grill and had fantastic spread of food. Tomahawk steak, butterflied mackerel, garlic yoghurt marinade lamb skewers. All with a stunning view. They had some decent guest beers on. Great to see a pub that is probably run + managed, and service with a smile.
Recently enjoyed a splendid dinner with friends in the old bar area of this terrific Gastro-Pub. There were 24 in the party all men which was quite a challenge for the lovely Amy and her front of house team. They excelled themselves. Head Chef, Josh, produced a brilliant menu, wonderfully delivered by Jamie in the kitchen. Can whole heartedly recommend !!
Was recommended this place from a friend and had to check it out on my visit over from Australia. It did not disappoint! Great vegan and vegetarian options. The service was outstanding and there is a lovely view of the downs. Great to see such local produce too. The handmade tartare sauce and the Aweside farm were standouts
Never judge a book by it's cover and that is certainly the case with The Eight Bells pub. What looks like an unassuming pub, along a country road, in a tiny village, turned out to be one of the best culinary experiences I've had for a long time. The menu will leave you spoilt for choice. We opted for the stuffed chicken and the haddock pie, which was one of the specials. As well as having the scotch egg for starters. My Lord, all of it was amazing, great produce used throughout, large portions and just great flavours. The staff are so friendly and attentive and we had the pleasure of meeting Phil, the owner, who made the experience even more enjoyable and topped off a great experience. Would highly recommend, even if you just stop by for a drink, but I am sure you will stay for the food!
