Dunsley Hall Country House Hotel

About

Once a Victorian home for shipping magnate, this 26-bedroom country house hotel is set in four acres of landscaped grounds near Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Story

Dunsley Hall Country House Hotel was built as a dream house for the Pyman shipping family in the Victorian period. From 1900 it was the country home of Frederick Haigh Pyman and his large family of thirteen children. Many historic features include oak panelling, an original stained glass window
depicting a seafaring scene, and an Inglenook fireplace bearing the Pyman family coat-of-arms. Stylish and original, Dunsley Hall retains the quality and unique character of the period. With a country house feel, comfortable furniture, books, memorabilia, open fires in the winter. Welcoming Yorkshire hospitality is the hallmark of this independent and family-run hotel, set in the quiet hamlet of Dunsley in four acres of landscaped gardens.

We had a two night stay here with friends. We all agree that it is a brilliant place to stay. The hotel is comfortable and furnished in keeping with the house. The staff are all so friendly and helpful. We had dinner on both nights which was three courses of beautifully presented and delicious food. Breakfast was just as good. Very good value and well worth a visit.

Not as expected 4 of us checked in with 3 rooms 5 ,7 and 10..fist we went to room 7 it really did smell of drains told reception they said they would sort it out as the cleaner had commented about it as well ...Then room 5 like a comedy sketch really to open the door one had to lift and the other turn the handle when key turned in the door ..Then onto room 10 at last nice.. We went for my sister in-laws 60th birthday and expected better..We went out for the day and got back to find room 7 was just like it had been saturated with bleach that was the smell now. We went back to reception and asked if we could change rooms and to my surprise the very rude receptionist said nope fully booked so that was that. All went back to our rooms but we forgot about room 5 and one of our party that had that room had to come and get me from room 10 to help him open the door after trying for almost 20 minutes. We then after resting for about 1 hour eventually ventured back out and went for a fish and chip supper in Whitby that was fantastic..got back to hotel or should I say "faulty tower's" as we all wanted to get some sleep for the following day. We all meet up in the morning for breakfast my sister in law who had room 7 said she did not get much sleep as there was some loud guest shouting until around 1am. The other thing she said that the water in room 7 was not that warm and came out really slow, and the room started smeling again of drains getting stronger through the night and felt sick.anyway we went for breakfast this was OK but I and my partner had a full English the egg was just cooked and the sausage was nothing like I have had before and had to leave it, my sister in law and her friend had some type of fish but after the first bite said she could not eat it all as it was full and I mean full of bones and commented other places that had fish on the menu had given the customer to have it boned but not this one..we then went back to our rooms and got ready for the day, This is not the best places I have stopped in and I can honestly say won't be going back again. The best part of the hotel was leaving the grounds. shocking place and not very friendly staff I don't rate the place at all spent the day in Whitby which was fantastic and then set off back home...
