Beautifully kept quaint older hotel. Room was cozy as can be with everything necessary for a weary traveler. Great WiFi. I’ll be back! Highly recommendedRooms: 5/5
I think the owners of this hotel are the same owners as the pub when it was there The pub pub also did catering, and we paid a £300.00 deposit for our wedding reception. We never saw the food or a refund - cancelled 2 weeks before the wedding. Also know they were sneaking back in to the building after one of thier Ltd companies went into liquidation supposedly and taking assets and not paying thier debtors with it. Charlatans if the same owners still
Not very well signposted. Nice room but smelled a bit damp on arrival. Couldn't stand up in the shower and I'm only 5' 6"! Sink so small I had a job to shave in it. No pegs on the back of door to hang coats on. And the sound of water gushing every so often was off putting. Wafer thin walls as we could hear everything our neighbours were saying.
Hmmm! The booking over email was so friendly and welcoming. We assumed once we found the Duke of Buckingham, the service would carry on in that tone. First, we had a little trouble finding the hotel. My fault again, but on hearing The Duke of Buckingham, one assumes they'll be a good ol' pub sign, no, it's situated above and behind a pizza parlour called Florio's, with little signage for the Duke. We were then met, through a kitchen hatch, by a surly young woman, who made it vey obvious with her body language, she didn't want to be there. The most she said was: name, first floor and pushed the keys at us. The room was clean, cramped but had everything we needed. The mattress was an old fashioned, marshmallow that you rolled together to meet in the middle and stay that way type. Having said all that, the location was perfect. But I don't think we'll stop there again.
Arrived at the room and it looked nothing like the pictures, but thought okay I’m only staying for a night. After a couple of hours I couldn’t bear the cold in my room and went down to reception to come and ask her to look at my radiator. The receptionist was absolutely lovely and came to help straight away. The radiator got a bit hotter but nowhere near enough to heat the room which is surprising given how small it was, and for how cold the bedroom was the bathroom was 3 times colder. I ended up sleeping with 3 layers on my top and in tracksuits and socks which I never would choose to - the window is right next to the bed and there was a horrible horrible draft all night. The staff are so lovely, but the place is a run-down wreck. As others have mentioned you can hear absolutely everything in the corridors and in other people’s rooms - my boyfriend asked me three times if my phone was buzzing and it was in another room down the corridor! My advice - do not stay here. Especially if it’s cold. Shame a building with no upkeep lets down the wonderful staff who work within. Here’s the heater that absolutely does not heat the room
Rooms clean, staff friendly and courteous. Beds comfortable and close to the town.Rooms: 4/5
Tiny room, heat did not work, was scalded in the shower, no lift, the only thing that is a plus is the location. Would not stay here again, very disappointed.Rooms: 2/5
Edit in Reply to the owner: They claimed to have offered us a new room and that we demanded a full refund at 9 PM on the Wednesday. This is wrong and inaccurate. We went down to reception on Wednesday afternoon and notified the reception of our issues. I told the reception that I would pay for the nights we stayed, but she flat out refused to help us. She said she had no control over this and only management could help. And she apologized because it was a "family run business". Didn't know being a family run business gave you an excuse to provide brutal service. It was after this experience where I asked for a full refund, via email. The owner claims to know what was said between me and the receptionist, but the receptionist didn't note a single word of our conversations even AFTER I asked her to at least make a list of our complaints so she could provide it to management. The response here and complete lack of accountability is another reason to stay well clear of this place. Notice how the random cars parked outside the front door of the room, the smell, lack of soundproofing or any other issues weren't addressed. The fact they didn't defend the "shed" as being a joke of a room speaks volumes. ---------------------------------------- I would highly recommend anyone looking to stay in Portsmouth to look elsewhere. The room we where placed in was situated at the back of a restaurant that is not affiliated with the hotel. You have the luxury each morning of the listening to the bin men and/or restaurant workers emptying the rubbish right outside your front door. You also have the pleasure of having two parking spaces right on your doorstep. During our eventful stay, we had 2 random cars parked outside our door and often heard them coming and going in the early hours of the morning. Each night, you can also hear people walking up and down the alleyway as there is ZERO soundproofing in the unit. By reading other reviews, I'm not the first person to have an issue with this. The hotel tried justifying calling this a "room" by saying its beside a cottage that is associated with the hotel. So basically, they placed a bed in the garden shed of that cottage and called it a hotel room. Along with it being a tiny converted shed, there is little to no natural light that enters the room, and there is an smell in that room that comes from the radiator. The genius who designed the room decided to place a clothes hanger right above the radiator, making sure the smell sticks to any clothes or jackets you have to hang there we had to dry clean two jackets to get rid of the smell as a result. The photo attached is the shed in question. A fun game you can play is try locate the front door of your room from the photo. To call this a hotel room is actually hilarious. We had booked to stay there for 5 nights, but had to leave and go to a different hotel in the city after 2 nights due to the condition of the "room" and hotel. Spoke to reception and was told there that wasn't much they could do due to it being a "family run business". Asked the receptionist if she at least, would take note of the issues we had with the room so she could give it to management, but she didn't seem too interested or bothered to do so. Management was only available on Tuesday mornings. All we were given was an email address to contact. When I reached out to the hotel, I was told I could have been placed in a different room if I asked, but that doesn't rectify the issue, as they'll continue to use this shed and call it a "room", and hope people won't complain. You can tell when a business takes pride in the work or service they provide, and its evident that this hotel isn't overly concerned with the service they offer. We stayed in the Travelodge for the remainder of our stay in Portsmouth, and thankfully that place was run like an actual hotel. If you're looking for a place to stay thats on the cheaper side, I would recommend it.
Parking can be a problem. Roadside parking Permit available from hotel but space not guaranteed. Rooms: Deluxe Room, but we were up in the top floor and room very very small could do with new carpet.
We stayed for two nights. Excellent for the price. Comfortable and cosy. The room was clean and furniture tidy. Only slight issue is the toilet and its size as it was pretty small, however still contained a toilet, shower and sink all of which were clean and fit for purpose. Also issue in the toilet regarding the plumbing as when using running water hot and cold, a rather loud vibrating sound almost like someone drilling into a wall comes from the toilet piping. I’m sure this will be fixed with time and it’s not quite as annoying for us as it is for other guests as it only happens when water is running. The room is warm with a nice large window and beds are very clean and comfortable. The room had a TV and tea making facilities. The staff were fantastic, very kind and helpful and the included wifi was good. A few fantastic pubs around with the sea front only a few minutes walk away! Obviously due to the pub connected not being open, no option for breakfast was available however this is not a problem as many local pubs and restaurants do good breakfasts! Very happy with everything and the small issues are not worth worrying over! Would definitely recommend and would also stay here again! Rooms: The cleanliness and furniture.
