The Dolphin

Story

The Dolphin in High Street Old Portsmouth has
been revived as one of the city’s great traditional pubs. Known for its historic links with Nelson, The Dolphin dates back to 1716 and offers 6 cask ales and a unique menu which includes a Sunday lunch with famously great roast potatoes.

It has a charming courtyard garden. Inside, the
pub has characterful furnishings of some age and pictures that reflect the history of the pub and the city - and there’s not a games machine or widescreen TV in sight.

The Dolphin is dog friendly, and well behaved
dogs are always welcome. We even have a
special “doggy” menu for your four legged friend.

"Portsmouth's oldest pub; traditional with some modern essentials, located right in the heart of the City."

Very very good food. I can vouch for the maple and bourbon wings! Delicious and it was prepared quickly. Reasonable pricing for the oldest pub in Portsmouth. Great atmosphere all-round.
You cannot beat the Sunday Roast at The Dolphin! Firstly it’s huge, with loads of meat, veg, potatoes & gravy. The extra stuffing & pigs in blanket are well worth it & if you ask nicely, the lovely Tracy will organise some cranberry sauce, no matter the meat you choose. Highly recommended for Sunday roast lovers!!!
Lovely pub & nice food, were out of skewers & coffee machine broken but nice nonetheless. Dog friendly & little water bowls & water available but were out of doggy treats that were advertised when we went. Been here a few times in the post covid era & still a nice pub to visit & old Portsmouth is a nice area to visit.
Great pub grub and hospitality. Good pint of ale - Landlord to wash it down with. Post event visit was a short walk from Southsea common and so welcoming of our GS dog too. Thanks.
Dog-friendly gem with great food and a very decent pint. Add to that ample street parking and views of the cathedral and you've pretty much got it all. We'll be back!
Excellent food. Superb staff. Guinness lovely.
Not a great experience … booked a table for 8 in the restaurant , to be told there was a function on there were 8 people, the bar area was packed and loud, a Christmas crooner was belting songs in the backdrop of World Cup football. One dinner had to be sent back as it was cold, manager was exceptionally rude - we won’t be back!
Arrived at 9 p/m with around 12 colleagues. No warm welcome, bar staff surly. Quiz was on and loud! The quiz finished and the pub emptied except for us. Football sound was then on and commentary so loud you couldn’t chat. Asked three times if sound could be turned down to be told they didn’t have any control over it. I estimate we brought in a good £150 worth of custom. Customer service was non existent.
Went for a Christmas party. Staff was nice & friendly but the food was not great. The salmon was dried up & the vegetables a bit soft & soggy. Pudding was okay, nothing special. Probably won't eat there again.
Clean, warm and welcoming. Good choice of beers and spirits. Oldest pub in Portsmouth but now owned by a chain but still retains its charm.
