Doncaster Royal Infirmary

Story

Doncaster Royal Infirmary is a district general hospital of 800 beds, located in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England run by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation TrustDoncaster Royal Infirmary started life as the Doncaster Dispensary on French Gate (now Greyfriars Road) in 1792. The foundation stone of the first purpose-built hospital in Doncaster, St James' Hospital, was laid in 1852. It was demolished in 1963 to make way for town improvements. An infirmary was opened in 1867 as the Doncaster General Infirmary and Dispensary. Within 20 years, the hospital was too small and unsuitable for the town's needs and developments in medicine. A three-day fund-raising bazaar was opened by HRH Princess Christian, and this connection led to Home Office approval for the institution to be known as Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Dispensary. Plans for another new hospital came to fruition in 1930, when the first part on Thorne Road (now the West Ward Block) opened to patients. The East Ward Block opened in 1968, the Women's Hospital in 1969, and the Children's Hospital in 1989.The infirmary is equipped with a radio studio which broadcasts Trust AM, the Foundation Trust's patient radio.

Admitted on Aug 24th, spent a week in there, most of the staff are hugely overworked, ambulances were waiting outside because of a lack of beds. The staff were working frantically all night trying to juggle poorly people, but beds don’t free up as they’d like due to social care. Have to say the food was amazingly good for the budget and always a great choice. When I’m recovered I will return to my ward to show my appreciation for their hard work
What can I say other than organised chaos. I was sent to three different reception desks by hospital staff before we were told that we had been sent to the wrong hospital even though we had a letter confirming the appointment was at doncaster royal infirmary and that we should have been at the hallamshire hospital in Sheffield instead . So we had a 52 mile round trip for nothing. I now have to wait until next Friday for another appointment. I hope I never have to visit this hospital ever again.
Sadly i have been here quite a lot as i seem to be accident prone. The waiting time is like watching paint dry, it can take several hours. It's not uncommon to be stuck waiting for 5 hours, just to be seen. The nurses are nice and very good when it comes to stitching up wounds, i just wish i could remember the nurses name from my last visit, since they were very helpful and the only reason i'm not giving 2 stars.
The care I got last night from the paramedics, doctors nurses even the porter was excellent. I can't thank them enough, even though they were busy the care and understanding was fantastic and luckily I was allowed home. Thank you to those that looked after me last night 6th January 2023.
My son was taken extremely poorly yesterday. Having failed to get him an appointment with the gp, same day centre or urgent carethat’s not a dig- they are pushed to their absolute limits I was advised to take him to a and e and thank god I did. As soon as we arrived he collapsed and was immediately taken to the children’s care section and placed in a side room and monitored. Despite it being obvious that the service is extremely busy he was given superb care.I can’t fault the staff there at all, they are working under such pressure and still remained kind and put my son at ease. The wait times are long but it’s the same everywhere. Services are at the brink and they are doing the best they can. I’m so grateful I was in the right place with him at the right time.
The treatment I have received over the last 6 months at the Chatsfield Suite has been outstanding, every member of staff from the bottom up has treated me with kindness, compassion and encouragement. You are an amazing team. Thank you
Minor injuries is so bloody inefficient there is one nurse and one aged doctor who is between them seeing 1 patient every half an hour meanwhile we are all sat orstandin in the atrium baking with no watersupply is what can only be described and a greenhouse. ... this is not acceptable by todays standards and I have already been sat in my local emergency care unit and was sent here as the closed our on hospital.
They treat their A&E patients like they are second class citizens. I took my friend down after being adviced by the hospital who carried out her operation to check that it wasn't infected, because she was in immense pain. We arrive at midnight and after waiting an hour,. She saw the triage nurse who took her blood pressure and some bloods. Hours went past people were called at half hourly intervals most had gone home and given up. at 5:30 she was called in woohoo we thought, but it was only to get her blood pressure checked again. there was one gentleman who came in at 12:30 and had, had is checked three times. At 6,am they changed the staff. we asked at 7am if the results of the blood test could be sent to her Dr. Oh no they said if you want the results you'll have to wait. Mt friend was exhausted at this stage and still in agony. They wouldn't not give her the results if she decided to go home, it was 7:30 and we'd been there since midnight. So much for a joined up service, so much for caring about your patients what an attitude. there were three other people who'd been treated the same. A woman came in at about 6:30am with a young baby I only hope she got better treatment than eveyone else. Poor poor service
Firstly the 2 female staff in child's A and E on Thursday evening were amazing . Staff on the child's observation unit are polite , caring and do more than enough for the child and . parent Now let's come to the children's ward staff!! They are rude, abrupt and have no child skills you ask a nurse a question and it's too muc, more concerned in gossiping at the desk. The first thing of introducing yourself to a parent and child is a big ask ! One nurse in particular I will be making a formal complaint about as her eyelash skills are fabulous but child skills are missing
I spent 8 weeks being looked after by some fantastic nurses on Ward 7 and Tacu ward6. I was admitted from A &E after having afall and fracturing my hip , arm and elbow also had severe kiďney problems. I cannot praise the nursing staff enough
