Callendar House

Story

Callendar House is a mansion set within the grounds of Callendar Park in Falkirk, central Scotland. During the 19th century, it was redesigned and extended in the style of a French Renaissance château fused with elements of Scottish baronial architecture. However, the core of the building is a 14th-century tower house.During its 600-year history, Callendar House has played host to many prominent historical figures, including Mary, Queen of Scots, Oliver Cromwell, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Queen Victoria. The current building is by far the most substantial historical building in the area, with a 300ft frontage. It is protected as a category A listed building, and the grounds are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant gardens.HistoryThe house lies on the line of the 2nd-century Antonine Wall, built by the Romans from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth. In the 12th century Thanes Hall or Thane House, located to the east of the present house, was one of the seats of the Callander family who were Thanes of Callander. In the fourteenth century the 5th Thane Sir Patrick Callander, supported the claim of Edward Balliol to the throne of Scotland. Sir Patrick Callander was later attainted and his estates were forfeited.

Always enjoy taking in the history of the area. Talks a lot about the start of Falkirk and have a number of artifacts on display. We have previously eaten in the tea room where they frequently hold receptions. They have changed out the furniture to be more modern and I'm not quite sure it suits the style of the room. The grounds are well kept and you can't beat the price (free). The architecture of the house is lovely and I really like the back of the house with it's double stairways.

Callendar House is a lovely house tucked away in Falkirk and the grounds are a gem. Even on a damp day we strolled through the woodland and around the lake. It is worth noting the house is closed on Tuesdays but you can still walk in the park.

What a beautiful place! Stopped off on our way home from Skye to have lunch in the lovely tea room which overlooks some of the grounds. Entrance is free, the staff lovely and the food is delicious and so cheap. Sandwiches, coffee and cake for 2 around £15! We will be back.
