"Farm-to-table restaurant and drovers inn. A traditional Black Mountains pub with a hole-in-the-wall bar. Flagstone floors. Well kept ales. Low intervention wines. Food served all day. And a fire crackling in the hearth."

As a youngster I used to come up this valley to watch the country's best trials riders and squeeze in an atmospheric and fabulously remote little pub for a pint and a packet of crisps. Regularly I checked to see if it had reopened but alas not. Until now, and what a revaluation it is! Bravely converted in lock down by a local farming family with local produce where feasible, you can even buy their fresh meat while visiting! The changes are a great and totally necessary improvement to make it a viable enterprise today in such a remote site. It now has good space inside and even more outside including a large permanently covered area and good car park. While retaining lots of its old country character it is now a truly visitable venue for a special occasion as we did or a walkers or cyclists drop in on the way around Hay Bluff. We were warmly greeted for our anniversary lunch and found the food to be great with real home chips as they should be. All three courses came looking simply appetising and were very tasty with their own perfectly prepared beef features. We thought it was also excellent value for the quality as it was not a standard pub fair. From other comments for drop in walkers and cyclists the bar menu may need to be tuned to reflect their needs but for us it was spot on. The Bull at Craswall is now well worth the drive for a nice meal in the beautiful Black Mountains.
A discovery. Only just opened the old drovers Inn it is something special. Gently and tastefully refurbished. The car drive to get there is wonderful too, what a location. The food is very good too. Unpretentious yet inventive with an emphasis on the excellent local produce. Not cheap but actually very good value as the quality is so evident. Great staff able to help with all sorts of issues.
Lovely place with an attractive garden and bar lounge. Excellent beers. My 50 day aged sirloin was tasty and the accompanying dripping cooked chips with garlic mayo were to die for. My partner's stone bass with clams was praised. Our shared dessert meringue with cream and goosegogs was delicious. Service friendly and attentive. One of the best meals out in some time. Highly recommended.
What a find! Fantastic mix of old and new. Delicious food & beer, great atmosphere & amazing rhubarb fizz cocktail! Would be great for a passing pint or full on food. Will definitely be back soon.
Visited on a Friday lunchtime. The location alongside Hays Bluff is superb. Warm welcome from excellent staff, really well thought out refurbishment. Restaurant with log fire was perfect on a cold wet day. Small menu of top quality seasonal choices; every course we selected was delicious. Good selection of local ales plus well thought out wine list. Prices, whilst not cheap, are real value for money; enjoy the experience! This is everything you'd want from a pub. A must visit. Parking: Good parking space which is next to the garden.
This place is beautiful! Everything about our visit was perfect. The location is lovely and the front entrance makes a great first impression. The cosy entrance pub part is beautifully decorated and every little design detail is carefully considered. The restaurant was a perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. The log fire smelled incredible and the food was fantastic. Everything we ate was delicious - the cauliflower with fennel was my favourite starter and my partners was the charcuterie board. We all had the roast beef for our mains. It was cooked perfectly and the gravy it was served with was surprisingly good - I don’t know what made it taste so good but it was nice and rich. I didn’t think I could fit in a dessert but decided to go for the malt ice cream and ginger beer sorbet. Wow! I didn’t expect it would be as impressive as it was! So tasty! Lastly the service was so welcoming and attentive. The owners and staff should feel proud to have such a gem of a place! We’ll absolutely be back and will be bringing friends with us.
Great location ! Lovey refurbished and character rich small pub. Large garden, but it must be said that we were not able to sit outside to eat our food due to shortage of staff. We were warned about this when we reserved a table for 3 people. We shared a room with 4 other adults and due to the noise in the small room l could not follow the conversation from my family at the same table. The mane room seemed just as loud with a family Birthday lunch. And be warned a stuffed fox's head purched on the wall will look down on you while you are confined to this small room
This was our second visit to the bulls head and was highly anticipated after our first lovely meal there. I say second but was really our third attempt as previously, we had walked there only to find it was closed with a note on the gate explaining they had shut for the afternoon. No mention on the website which I had double checked times on. Still, I had forgiven them as the first visit was so great. Not so much this time. A Saturday lunchtime menu consisted of four items on the main course. Two based on beef and the 2 drovers lunch options, a sort of ploughman's with sausage roll in a meat and veg version. We had talked about what we might choose from the menu we created in our minds on the walk there. The drovers lunch, one of each type, was not the glorious lunch we had anticipated. Underwhelming would be an fair description. I had had a steak on my previous visit so had wanted to try something different and didn't want to be bounced in to paying the top end item on the menu. We were disappointed with our visit, despite the enthusiastic table staff. Hoping this was just a bump in the road.
Charcuterie with pickled fennel to start, flat iron steak with sauce béarnaise, beef dripping cooked chips and garlic mayonnaise, followed by panna cotta with poached pear. Lovely people even if I did get the billwithoutaskingfor it... saved me a coffee, amazing food by people who know what they are doing! Vegetarian options: Options available Parking: Perhaps 30 spaces Dietary restrictions: They asked about it at the time of booking
A really excellent meal. Delicious food, all locally grown and beautifully prepared. Friendly service. I am still dreaming about the blackberry jelly dessert which was incredible! People had told us it was expensive but I thought for the quality of the food the prices were actually quite reasonable. For us it's a "special occasion" kind of place and I can't wait to go again.
