Blackwell Grange Hotel

Story

Blackwell Grange is an early 18th-century country house at Blackwell, near Darlington, County Durham, England. Much altered in the 19th century, it is now a hotel. It is a Grade II* listed building. The house was built about 1710 for George Allan, a wealthy industrialist who died in 1748. The three-storey, five-bayed central block was extended in the mid-18th century by the addition of two substantial two-storey five-bay wings and a ten-bay south garden front.Allan left the estate to his granddaughter, and in 1785 it passed to her cousin James Allan of Darlington. In 1828, it was bequeathed to George Allan, and from him it passed, in about 1850, to a cousin Robert Henry Allan (High Sheriff of Durham 1851), whose mother was Hannah Havelock. In 1880, another cousin, Sir Henry Havelock Bt., came to the property on the condition that he change his name to Havelock-Allan. The Havelock-Allan baronets held the estate until after the death of the second Baronet in 1953.The estate park is now a golf course, The Blackwell Grange Golf Club, and the house is a Forestdale Hotel. In February 2013, it was announced that the hotel will become part of the Choice Hotel franchise with a complete renovation of the bars, lounges and bedrooms.

We had our wedding reception at The Blackwell Grange Hotel a couple of weeks ago and it was perfect from start to finish. We had our reception in the George Allan suite, the room was beautiful with a private bar and outside terrace. We have so many amazing photos from the day. We went for a two course buffet wedding breakfast which went down really well with all our guests. Everyone complimented the food and The Blackwell were very accommodating for our guests with dietary requirements. They were also really welcoming to our dog, Walter. He was allowed to pop into the venue for a few photos.nnThe team were amazing, particular shout out to Deborah and Margaret - who made the planning and running of the day so effortless and smooth.
The staff and service were excellent, and the staff went above and beyond many times to help us during a difficult time. They were very patient, helpful and kind 24/7. The overall 4 stars were because the room and bathroom were cold, a heater was provided for the room plus an extra duvet. I would stay there again. The breakfast and Sunday lunch were scrumptious. Despite work being carried out in the kitchen even the reduced menu was nice. The kitchen work is finished now. The manager is on hand, talks to guests and genuinely cares that all is well. The staff are golden. Well worth staying here.
The staff here were great very accommodating and helpful! Plus the site is beautiful and covered in bunnies!!nnFabulous breakfast w lots of choice. The leisure centre is nice the facilities are good, except the changing room. If I had some flip flops I would have been golden though.
Upon arriving I received great service with a speedy check in. The layout of the reception and lounge area with open fire was amazing, very relaxing and steeped in history. The room however 213, North Wing was a throw back to the 70's, dated and in poor condition. The carpets were stained, the bathroom impractical and the bath was only big enough for a small child, not very comfortable at all. The bed linen is basic and the duvet is, at best, a tog 3.5 which keeps you nice a cool in the summer, probably not best for the winter days though. There are workable facilities in the room, as expected for a 4 star rated hotel, but dated. The very small TV hangs on the wall at an angle that isn't great for viewing. There are no plug sockets at the bedside tables, which is inconvenient. One of the bedside lights wasn't working either.nnAs for the food: the restaurant layout is lovely, the staff are well trained and attentive. However, the food is very inconsistent. I had the rump steak which was cooked well one night and overcooked the next. In the last evening I had steak and ale pie which was just disastrous, but ate it as I was very hungry from a long day at work. There are very few, if any, healthy meals available and no calorie indications for any.nnOverall, I would stay here for work purposes, however, would not stay here for leisure.
Stay for a great weekend.nOur first time at this hotel.nNot our last.nAbsolutely fantastic. Service was excellent. Room was very comfortable and very well presented. Breakfast was excellent too. Just what we needed to start our day.nIf there was a 10 star rating. It would be given.nSam on reception made our visit. A welcome like no other. Even made time to chat about our following day out.nThankyou for a great stay.
