Did my 36th blood donation yesterday. I love Yonge and Bloor, and was devout when the clinic was at Bay and Bloor. Sad to hear one of my favorite volunteers passed - he used to sign my card with such prestigious penmanship. Was a very kind man, and sad to hear he passed. Great service.
I had a very positive experience with the service. The staff are very friendly, and they are very welcoming. It was my first time donating blood at Canadian Blood Services, and I didn’t get the feeling that I was nervous because the staff who assisted me she’s a Filipina explained to me very well how it’s going to be. No pain with needles at all; it took 7 minutes to fill the bag, and once done, I’m like, “That’s it?”. I’ll regularly donate blood from now on. Great job!
I was disappointed with my experience at Canada Blood Services earlier this year. The staff seemed poorly trained and had difficulty locating veins in my arm, which has been a recurring issue; they really should be using a vein finder to assist with this. Additionally, I received incorrect names on my printed donor cards multiple times, and if they had any intention of correcting their mistakes, they would have done so without insisting I return for a third visit, which is incredibly frustrating. To make matters worse, I experienced nurses moving the needle after it had been inserted, which is unacceptable in medical practice. It’s unfortunate to feel discouraged by such a lack of professionalism and expertise, especially since I know I’m not alone in facing these challenges.
First time donating at this location and would come back again! Great staff/service, organized system and follows a good protocol for the pandemic stage 3. There's security out at the front door monitoring and keeping people company while they wait outside. They have good identifiers/labels and a digital sign in machine as well which they provide touch pens to sanitize. Check-in, wait time and donation portion was pretty seamless. They provide masks at check-in and there are TVs to wait for your name to be called. They bring you to a room with a safety divider in place to go through protocol to check if you're good to donate today. Once good, you get the donation package to carry through and staff will ask for your arm preference. Overall, staff is pretty aware and conscious of how you're doing and checks in on you pretty often. Tip: This location can get confusing inside the underground mall. It is located far west side of the underground mall, close to the Yonge Street entrance of the Hudson Bay Centre not to be confused with Hudson's Bay unit on the far east side. Also, make sure to drink a lot of water to make the donation easier.
I’ve been a dedicated donor for years, but my recent experience at this Canadian Blood Services location was awful. I went for my 10th donation, and the nurse who assisted me was terrible. She took a long time to find my vein, and once she finally did poke me, the blood was coming out incredibly slowly and it was uncomfortable. Having donated many times before, I know this wasn’t normal. Instead of fixing the needle, she kept the needle in and dragged her hands down my arm, trying to get the blood to flow, which made it even more uncomfortable. When that didn’t work, she started moving the needle around inside my arm, which was painful and unnecessary. I’ve had times where they had to adjust the needle or try the other arm, but she said she couldn’t try again. She didn’t explain why, she just kept the needle in. After a couple of minutes, I told her it was uncomfortable, but she said there was “no flow” and that she had to remove the needle. When I asked why, she just shrugged and said, “sometimes it happens.” I’ve donated plenty of times, and this has never happened. I told her she probably missed the vein, but instead of trying again or using the other arm, she said she didn’t know how much blood she took out, so I’d have to wait 3 months to try again. To top it off, after removing the needle, she just bandaged me up and sent me on my way. No offer to sit, eat, or drink, like they always do after donations, which I found alarming. I’ve always been treated well in the past, but this experience was so bad I honestly never want to return to this location. As an O- donor, I get frequent calls to donate, but this experience was so distressing I don’t want to deal with her again.
First of all I'd like to say that i love donating blood, the fact of giving blood to a random person and it's going to be useful for them makes me feel really good. It's my first time donating in Canada and I'd like to say that it was great, when i arrived i had to register and i got a cute "Be nice to me, I'm new!" sticker. After registering i did a 5 min questionnaire. After that i went to a room where i got my blood pressure and my middle finger poked to check if my immune system was above 130 and as it was 156 i passed woohoo. I left the room and before i sat on the waiting room a staff member came to me and asked me if i was ready. They gave me a foam ball and wrapped my arm in order to make my vein came out. I also asked the lady what was the difference in between donating platelets and regular blood and she was super nice. She gave me the whole explanation about platelets and even about the blood plasma. Now I know that it's more useful to donate blood rather than platelets or plasma. So vampire needle showed up and waited for about 15 minutes until it sucked all the blood it needed from me 500 milliliters. After that they gave me a cotton patch and had to press it down for about 5 minutes and then got an "I gave blood" band aid and asked me to go to the tables that are by the entrance the tables have a tray with cookies and fruit cocktail. They offered me apple or orange juice and gave me a blood drop shape pin for donating there for the first time. All the staff is great, the washrooms are super neat!. Thanks to all the staff for making this location a great place to donate.
I love how this place is run. They dig into your vein and wiggle it around while constantly asking "are you okay sir?". Such a pleasant experience. That's assuming they don't keep removing it to 'readjust' the needle, causing unnecessary bruising. The quality of patrons skilled in drawing blood has gone down over the past year as they have been hiring people with worse and worse dexterity and expertise. Seriously, I don't know if I will be donating again at this place again..sigh
this is my first time donating blood at this clinic and I had an excellent experience, very friendly and accommodating staff. spacious clean and well organized centre. And they make sure that you're ok before leaving. And the Supervisor 'Kristel' makes sure the smooth running of the clinic.
I've had mostly great experiences at this clinic from the volunteers at the front to the nurses throughout. Let them know if you're nervous and they'll help you. My twin and I just had our 16th and 24th donations here.
I had an excellent first-time experience donating blood at this centre this week! The service was incredibly fast and efficient, with a friendly and accommodating staff. The entire process was smooth and quick. I'm definitely making this a regular habit and will be encouraging my friends and colleagues to join in too!
