Currently planning our wedding here and the staff have been fantastic as we keep coming back with more odd little questions. I'm sure it must drive them mad answering the same things but they do it with a lovely smile and polite attitude. The reception staff are very friendly. Always get offered tea too which is a nice bonus!

I've stayed here many times for both business and pleasure. This hotel and the rooms have so much character and settings are gorgeous. Staff are very welcoming and helpful. Rooms I've stayed in have always been very clean, comfortable and functional - everything I need. The spa is lovely, I have had a few treatments and never disapointed. The food at the hotel is very nice. There is also a small gym. There is no lift so will have to use stairs but that didn't bother us. This is always my first choice of hotel when visiting Peterborough

We won a gift certificate for a family of four to dine here. The seats were comfortable, the food was excellent although it would have been nice to have a couple more choices on the menu, and the onion soup was curiously sweet! The ambience was pleasant and service attentive without being intrusive. We had a 50th birthday party in the function room next to the restaurant but I wasn't even aware they were there. Overall, slightly more expensive than most restaurants but the quality is there.

On paper it has the trappings of a upmarket spa hotel. Old house with bags of character, swimming pool/spa/gym, pretty grounds and an expensive restaurant. In reality its all rather old and tired, in need of maintenance and within the pricing structure, room standards are a lottery. The pub/bar that advertised as part of the hotel is just a local pub without obvious physical connection through to the hotel. The hotel's bar is used by groups hiring for weddings, parties etc. and is then all but off limits to residents (unless you're a fun of crashing other people's weddings). Young staff are friendly but poorly led and generally overstretched. Keen to put things right when they go wrong but not able to stop them happening in the first place. Old buildings have their creaks, quirks and faults of course but here, general maintenance appears to be overlooked. Bathrooms have been updated and look great but rooms haven't yet followed suit with cracked plaster and peeling paint. Old mismatching furniture that makes you feel like you're staying at your Gran's house, only with smaller bedrooms. On the plus side, dinner was great and the dining rooms as grand as you would expect from such a building. Just don't expect the usual country house spa hotel standard.

Although the place was clean and beautiful, there were a few things that were disappointing. First of all, we came to the hotel straight from our wedding to find out that we needed to carry all our stuff to the third floor as there are no lifts! We were SO TIRED! Secondly, having mentioned at the point of booking about our wedding, there was NO acknowledgment of any of that when we arrived (this was in a huge contrast to a tiny inn hotel in Costwolds where we went after our visit in Orton Hall). And thirdly, we didn't find Reception staff very friendly; there was no sympathy on their behalf about our breakfast being missed. So thanks to God, restaurant staff were so more accommodating and served our breakfast to which we were 10 minutes late. We were so thankful, but having paid £130 a night we felt we didn't receive the service for which we paid.
