Augill Castle

About

Augill Castle is a unique place to stay between the English Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, England's two favourite national parks.

Story

A relaxed, quietly groovy place to stay in the most beautiful part of England. The original forerunner of of a new style of hotel which isn't afraid to break the mould and put personality and authentic hospitality ahead of trouser presses and direct dial telephones.
Unlike anywhere you have ever stayed before, Augill is utterly romantic while at the same time being relaxed and laid back for families, parties and celebrations.

We had a lovely afternoon tea ,all the good was home baked , the services was excellent and the staff were professional but very friendly. The room where afternoon tea is served is a lovely room filled with lots of lovely old furnishings. The dining room is the next room and once again a very nice looking room , far more modern. The toilets are beautiful, just what you might expect in a castle.
Went last night for dinner, a last minute booking, what can I say fantastic, it was my wife’s birthday, we where staying close by, looked on the web for somewhere, to eat, locally, find the Castle, from the moment the door was opened, felt welcomed, I can’t believe it wasn’t packed, it’s beautiful, only disappointing thing was it was nighttime, and we couldn’t see the outside in all its glory, the food was fantastic, we will definitely be back. Hopefully next time to stay with you. Thank you so much for making us feel so welcome. We will be back, already recommended the castle to friends and family. Food & drinks: Food outstanding
What can I say about our stay at the castle? It was absolutely delightful. Wendy and Simon are wonderful hosts along with their staff. The setting is beautiful and the rooms are spacious. The castle grounds are lovely was greeted with a lovely beautiful butterfly as well. Both of breakfast, and the dinner were extremely tasty and well cooked. It was absolutely delightful to have a real burning fire in the room that really cosy feel. The beds are very comfortable and the bathroom is huge, all in all a five star experience. Rooms: Spacious and beautiful. Food & drinks: Tasty and well cooked
I stayed here with a friend and we had a nice time. The staff are friendly, the building is lovely and in a great location near the Dales and the Lake district. The beds were comfy and I loved the complimentary sherry in the rooms. I really liked how you could go sit in the different communal areas in the castle. The grounds also looked lovely. Some things we didn't love were - the food at dinner in particular - the beetroot salad was overdressed, the aubergine tough to cut through, the "beans on toast" starter a bit flavourless. Also the decor in the communal areas isn't hugely to my taste and felt a little dated union jack cushions etc. The plug in the bath didn't work and had to be held down by my friend's foot throughout her bath. However we had a very nice time. Overall good but perhaps we expected a little more from the website, price and the previous reviews. I wasn't sure whether to go for 3 or 4 stars - it's probably a 3.5/5.
We haven't even finished our stay and am tingling to leave a 5 star review as Augill Castle is simply the cherry on the cake..the owner run nature provides a warmth like no other and the staff are so very welcoming and attentive. The room is clean, perfect in every way and beautifully furnished. The owners have done a fantastic sympathetic restoration to bring this property back to life to allow guests to stay here and they share the journey and individual room history with informative placards throughout the building, even a book on the restoration is available in the room and to take away for a very reasonable price. Can't wait to read it! We are so lucky to have found this Gem and will undoubtedly return. Dying to see and stay in some of the other rooms, close our eyes and drift back in time for a moment feeling sense of people and times gone by. I sincerely hope the owners can enjoy this business for many many years to come and their legacy now imprinted on the property to be continued for future generations to enjoy as we have. Rooms: Stunning Food & drinks: Beautifully cooked presented meals with a very professional flare. Great wine list and bar
We had our wedding here in summer 2023. An amazing experience all around that we would highly recommend to anyone. The staff was friendly, super helpful, took care of all the meals and they were vegan-friendly, gluten-free friendly, and not to mention, delicious. It's a bit of a journey coming from out of the UK we opted for trains to Kirkby Stephen, some guests rented cars but well worth it. To Wendy and Simon, and the rest of the staff, thank you so much for an unforgettable experience.
We had our wedding here, the most thoughtful, friendly, clearly experienced staff in a truly beautiful unique setting. The food was so good it even brought a room of our constantly talking family and friends to a very rare, brief silence, quite an achievement. We had everything from start to finish here from guests arriving who were staying overnight, to the ceremony itself, followed by photography, food, drinking, everything under one roof, and the care of the fantastic hosts. From the first meeting till the end, it's clear this is a professional team of experienced people, with hosts who make you feel welcome, giving you the feeling of Augill being your home for the day. A day that we will never forget, we cannot thank you enough. Rooms: Each room is unique with clearly years of thought and attention put into them. Could spend a day lost exploring and reading. Food & drinks: Clearly experienced and professional staff with fantastic quality food and drinks. Best desert for a very long time.
Absolutely fantastic. The food and service were excellent. Exceeded my expectations and will definitely be going again. We had a brilliant time. Noteworthy details: It is a true working castle. The family who live there were very friendly. The surrounding area is beautiful.
We visited Augill Castle on a weekday for afternoon tea for 2 and had the place all to ourselves. Jude, who looked after us, was brilliant and just the right level of attentive. Food and drink were spot on - all were freshly made and scone still warm from being fresh baked. It was a great treat and I'd happily reccommend this place to others too. Thank you!
