Anne Hathaway's Cottage

Story

Anne Hathaway's Cottage is a twelve-roomed farmhouse where Anne Hathaway, the wife of William Shakespeare, lived as a child in the village of Shottery, Warwickshire, England, about west of Stratford-upon-Avon. Spacious, and with several bedrooms, it is now set in extensive gardens. The earliest part of the house was built prior to the 15th century; the higher part is 17th century. The house was known as Hewlands Farm in Shakespeare's day and had more than 90acre of land attached to it; to call it a cottage is really a misnomer, as it is much larger than the term usually means. As in many houses of the period, it has multiple chimneys to spread the heat evenly throughout the house during winter. The largest chimney was used for cooking. It also has visible timber framing, typical of vernacular Tudor architecture. After the death of Hathaway's father, the cottage was owned by her brother Bartholomew, and was passed down the Hathaway family until 1846, when financial problems forced them to sell it. However, it was still occupied by them as tenants when it was acquired in 1892 by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, which removed later additions and alterations. In 1969 the cottage was badly damaged in a fire, but was restored by the Trust. It is now open to the public as a museum.ReplicasFull size replicas of Anne Hathaway's cottage have been built around the world:

Lovely place, much nicer than I remember at 17 on a school trip! Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, too. Nice cafe across the road too with outside tables for when the weather is kind. Highly recommend. I walked from the town centre and it took about 25 minutes at a reasonable pace. A nice walk that cuts through a public park, passing many of Stratford’s quaint houses and beautiful gardens.

Generally informative place to visit, with a staggered enterance to the house every 5 minutes with an introductory talk and a secondary talk in the kitchen of the house. Although it is quite small, you can then move through the lower and upper floors at your own pace, with things to read and interact with. The gardens/field are large due to it previously being a sheep farm. The sculpture garden gives a peaceful, hidden walk and the activity hut makes it more entertaining for children.

An utterly captivating place, that was home to Shakespeare's family. The tours are well organised and staggered so you're not waiting behind, or holding other visitors up. The staff are highly knowledgeable and show real passion for what they do, making the history of the house come alive. The cottage is fascinating and educational, with exceptionally well maintained grounds and original furniture from the period. Definitely worth visiting.

Even in the depths of January this place was captivating. The guides were so helpful and friendly, they answered all my questions (and I always have a lot of questions). The orchard is lovely, the gardens were obviously not in full bloom as we went in January, but you could tell that it was being kept and managed by people who want you to get the full tudor experience. Definitely the place to take a budding historian!

Interesting but pricey. If you have the time, it's probably best to get the whole package, works out more economical. But to see everything fully you need more than a day.
