Don't walk past this cemetery, you must go inside to experience this amazing place with so much history. Most of the graves and memorial stones are overgrown and have moved as the ground has shifted. There is so much atmosphere in this very old place, quite a green and leafy haven for local walkers with dogs and prams.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
One of the magnificent seven cemeteries of London, Abney Park Cemetery deserves its place in the list. A beautiful and peaceful site that is a wildlife sanctuary. The paths can get muddy in bad weather, so sensible shoes are required. The main entrance has toilets and a cafe. The toilets were clean. The site is wheelchair and pushchair accessible from the main entrance. There was an entrance on the other side, but I forgot to check that for accessibility
Our favourite place to take the dog for a walk in the summer. The shaded paths are remarkably cooler than hot pavement. There's always plenty of other doggos to make friends.
Abney Park is situated a short walk from Stoke Newington station. The park was sadly neglected until the 1970s when the park rediscovered, and thanks to the help of local volunteers, it was given a new lease of life. The park sits in the grounds of two former homes, one belonging to Sir Isaac Watts, a notable non-conformist and writer of poetry and hymns such as joy to the world, and the other Abney House. The land was originally landscaped as an arboretum, but in the 1830s, new legislation meant the land had to be requisitioned and used to bury the dead of victorian England. The park contains the graves of many notable people, including William Booth founder of the Salvation Army, performers from the music hall era, a nurse who worked alongside Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War, and the last resting place of those lost in the first world war. Thanks to a dedicated team, many parts of the cemetery have been restored, including the chapel, which on my last visit was dilapidated but is functioning once again. Finally, the cemetery is also a recognised nature reserve, and many species of flora and fauna call it home
This is a cemetery which means a lot of graves. This cemetery lives up to that billing. There’s also a nice old church building thing for ceremonies. It’s famous for the graves for the Salvation army founder and his family and the graves are prominently positioned. A few other nice monuments and graves dotted about. The paths were very muddy in February so you need proper walking shoes that time of year. There were lots of dog walkers around the place.
Wonderful cemetery that’s part of the magnificence seven, has Egyptian influence like the others do and is currently undergoing renovation. The place has so many dogs that are often off leads, so if that bothers you, you may not want to go or you can write the council. Generally a peaceful and pleasant experience.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

The Abney Park Cemetery Trust was a majestic place to visit! I cannot believe how beautiful and well-kept the symmetry is. Definitely worth a visit – particularly on a sunny day, as the sunlight streams through the trees.
Disintegrating Victorian graveyard, largely overgrown, choked and reclaimed by nature, the edifice crumbling and sepulchral. Palpably evocative, cryptic and potently Gothic. Fascinatingly gruesome and highly recommended. Recently revisited : Improvements, maintenance and new buildings including a café deflate the hubris and largely conducive to increasing the hipster hangout quota.
Peaceful, historic, curious, war memorial and family resting place. Nature and different birds, trees, plants and flowers creates a calming and relaxation effect. There are benches and alot of dog walkers if you fancy taking your pooch out for a walk. Beautiful church/Chapel in the centre designed of a cross.
