198 is a pre-eminent cultural space in Brixton, which explores the rich diversity of artistic practices informed by globalisation and emerging cultural identities.
Known initially as Roots Community, 198 has grown from a community arts space, which helped nurture the Black Arts movement, into a contemporary visual arts organisation searching out artistic excellence and investing in emerging talents.
Throughout our 20-year history, we have actively encouraged the development of a rich, burgeoning visual arts scene, which:
- truly reflects the contemporary artistic, social and political concerns of emerging artists and diverse audiences;
- investigates the nature of our constantly evolving society, and embraces all the individuals and communities which make-up cosmopolitan cities such as London.
Our Creative Learning team has been at the forefront of artistic education since the early 1990’s. Through our education programme, we engage with issues surrounding educational underachievement, social inclusion and the challenges faced by young people in urban areas.
We lead creative projects of artistic excellence in digital media, in partnership with other cultural organisations. We work with a wide range of referral agencies such as Connexions, Youth Offending Services, voluntary sector and statutory education providers.
We also provide Gallery and school based arts education with a focus on cultural diversity through artist led workshops.
