London Glassblowing

About

Peter Layton's London Glassblowing is a hot glass studio focused on the creation and display of contemporary glass art. The studio has a reputation as one of Europe's leading glassmaking workshops.

Story

The London Glassblowing Studio and Gallery has been established for over 35 years and is where world-renowned Glass Art pioneer and ambassador Peter Layton creates his work. The Studio is currently in its third home, located on the vibrant Bermondsey Street, SE1 - at the heart of a growing hub of London's finest Galleries and Eateries. Leading on from the street, doors described by The Guardian as 'Cathedral-like..' lead up to the cutting-edge London Glassblowing Gallery; a fantastic open plan space with regular exhibitions showing everything about contemporary glass from hot blown work, to cast pieces, to jewellery exhibits. Sitting behind the Gallery is the Studio/Workshop, where the vast team of renowned artists blow the work using the wide array of blowpipes, hot furnaces, the Glory-hole, the Kilns, and at a safe distance, a section for the public and passers by to sit and watch the beautiful act of blowing glass live. Behind the scenes is a cold workshop where all the cutting, polishing and finishing takes place.
London Glassblowing works somewhat as a collective, in which Peter Layton nurtures talent by inviting artists to work and blow for London Glassblowing, in return receiving an unrivalled space to blow and exhibit their own work.

Incredible works on display, so many stunning pieces of art. Our lecturer Phil was doing a demonstration the day we went, watching the lamp-working process was mesmerising. We also got to watch the glassblowing process, and it’s absolutely insane to see how much work goes into the craft! We were also met by the loveliest staff who offered us some mince pies. Will definitely be visiting again!
The craftsmanship from London Glassblowing is exquisite, mesmerizing, and unique. The high end pieces are priced accordingly, with most items in the high hundreds to mid thousand pounds. However, this is a rather small glassblowing setup, and we didn't see any glassblowing demonstrations, which was disappointing.
Beautiful workshop. They talked to us and walked us through their process as they worked, super interesting, super kind people.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

What a delightful gallery. Amazing pieces of glass art. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and to see the artists at work was fascinating.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
This place is part glass production and part exhibition space. It's really fascinating to see the Glassblowing, heated in the furnace and then shaped. I was lucky enough to be here on the last day of the Earth/Sea/Sky theme; many artists exhibiting their works inspired by this theme. Peter Layton, the Founder of London Glassblowing 1976 has some of his creations on display. All the pieces exhibited are for sale if you can afford the eye-watering prices. This place is free to visit.
We had such a wonderful time - a truly stunning display of artistry. Our 3 kids were absolutely mesmerised by watching the glassblowing and stayed for a full hour and were fascinated. Have my eye on a perfume bottle - or two! A small but perfect store and definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Beautiful glassblowing studio/production space with stunning pieces on display. It was so inspiring to be around such incredible art, I’d never seen anything like it before. Everyone was very friendly and it felt like a welcoming space!
I found this shop unexpectedly, after dropping something off at a nearby shop. What a wonderful opportunity to find a beautiful piece of functional art to bring home. I loved the neighborhood and the terrific cafes as well.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Friendly, relaxed ambience. Exquisite glass art. Some actually affordable! Interesting and informative to watch the pieces being created! Lovely reception at the door, too. Very welcoming.....
