Ye Olde Rose and Crown is a Real Ale establishmet in Stafford. Run by Tim the new Landlord, under the joules umbrella
Ye Olde Rose & Crown sits snugly on Market Street just off the main market square between the Gatehouse Theatre and Stafford's fabulous central library. Joule’s has a long history in Stafford and the old brewery had a number of houses in the town. The current pub was built around 1830, the extensive cellars with their arched ceilings are substantially older. These ancient cellars were part of the original Rose and Crown - 'Ye Olde Rose & Crown'. At one time despite its size the pub was an inn, the attic rooms housing the publican and his wife with the larger middle floors for paying guests. The rear still shows the distinctive arched openings for the stabling of horses, above the haylofts, now the washrooms. The hayloft would have been the least expensive lodging for travellers. The rear courtyard would have originally been accessible from the alley which is now part of the theatre.
We refurbished this cosy and charachterful little 'hole in the wall' pub in 2011. The main front room has a lovely fireplace and we have revealed some original paneling, the floor has wide oak boards and our biggest ever mirror a re worked orginal design for Slumbering Monk. The rear room also has a real fire and is just as cosy as the front room. To the rear we have a warm little courtyard neatly paved with Staffordshire Blues. The entrance is an original shutt that used to connect Market Street to St Martins Square and ran alongside the current library building. This hidden gem is just right for our Stafford Brewery Tap where we can showcase our Fine Pale Ales.
Our kitchen here specialises in the classic sandwich, always with fresh bread which we buy daily, homemade soups and chunky chips. Our aim to be known for the best sandwich in Stafford!
