Beautiful place kids loved the weekend with wombwell 9th
The site is easy to access from the M1, though be careful if it's your first time - the entrance to site is not that visible from the road, especially if you're arriving after dusk on a Friday night. The road descends steeply down the bank and is single track, with very little scope for passing, though it is now a paved surface - it used to be unpaved and was a nightmare. At the bottom is a small car park, with room for a dozen cars, maybe a few more with carefully planned parking. The building is one single structure with an entrance porch with room to strip off wet kit, a large activity room, decent sized kitchen, 3 bunk rooms and a pair of toilets with shower. The building and all the rooms are in a good state of repair and we'll maintained by the site. The outdoor area is a small grassland area directly outside the hut, and gentle to steeply banked light woodland elsewhere. The M1 is clearly visible from the site, so there is some light and noise pollution outside if that matters to you. The site is not that big, but ideal for a group of perhaps 20, but the price is right for the site at this size. The most annoying part of this site though is the rubbish situation. There are no bins at site, and you have to take all your rubbish away with you when you leave. As you can imagine, a group of 20 eating 6 meals from Friday night through to Sunday morning can generate a lot of catering rubbish and food waste. Trying to persuade members of your group to each take home a bag of rubbish to ease the burden on the organisers helps, but people are often not keen to put a bag of kitchen slips in their car to take away with them. Be prepared to tackle the situation in advance!
I'm local to this place I live 5 mins away and ride through on the mountain bike regularly for some twisty fun in the nearby wood.. Picturesque place when you've got it to yourself but when the camp site is open it becomes a little hectic with so many cars they are forced into the surrounding woodland messing up the trail and just generally being where they really shouldn't just out of respect for the woods and indeed the locals who use this place when the scout groups are not there. Although I guess to get round this problem a fair few tress have been felled to make room for parking cars ... On uneven ground.
It's a great place to rent out to have a fun weekend away. It's very basic but it's a scout camp. The kitchen, showers and toilets work. The heaters in the bunk rooms work well enough for it to be too hot at times. There's a concrete track down the carpark, but it's only wide enough for one car and there are no passing places so be careful, reversing back at night is not fun. Beware of dog walkers crossing the site.
Great location & facilities. My son was well looked after
A great place for camping. Huge fire pit and a good combination of open field and woodland. The hut provides indoor and outdoor toilets with plenty of tables and chairs. The dorms gave us some good quiet spaces too. Of the 2 fields for camping one was off to one side, near the parking and separate so quite good to put our scouts in. The other field has plenty of flat places but any more than 6 or 7 and you'd be into the longer grass. The view and sunset is incredible in summer when we were there
Ron Management team here. Thank you for the positive reviews. We are a scout campsite so we do not take public family bookings. As regards rubbish disposal. The local council will not collect. To hire a private contractor would cost us £65 . We ask people to burn rubbish but take bottles and tins away. This works very well usually and has for 58 years. We can supply skips from a local company if groups wish and some do. As regards numbers and space. We have 14 acres of which 5 acres are grass. Our district have had 300 camping on a district camp. We regularly have 150 over a summer weekend. If we can fit you in we will.
Nice medium size site. Good facilities. Excellent views. Easy access from M1 and clear signage to site. Well maintained roadway from main road.
Great place for kids, big area, Forrest. Place for fire and hiking. Bunk beds, kitchen with full needed equipment, toilets with showers. Highly recommended
A great place for weekend LARPs. We use it all the time. Fields & woods as well as the buildings themselves.
