Overall good experience. Convenient to the airport. Nevertheless, a few caveats if you are not accustomed io Scottish roads. Unless you truly need the space, get the smallest car you can, and don't go for the free upgrade in size. They go over the car in near microscopic detail for scratches etc. Scottish non-highway roads are narrow, and potholed...many are "single track." Even Scottish drivers will hit the left curb, and ruin a tire. We had to replace one. Thankfully we didn't mess up the alloy rims which would have been £££$$$$. Also petrol & diesel are costly. Filling up a 10 gallon tank was over $50. Good thing we got 50 mpg. Nav system on Kia Cree'd was useful, but not well labeled at all... basically an icon on an unmarked line. Scottish roads are NOT well marked. Download an offline Google map of the area as a much better labeled guide. All said, despite the tire and the nailbiting, the staff was helpful and kind, and we got by with no further damage.
Never again will we book with Thrifty! Our flight was delayed and we couldn’t contact them as we were stuck on the runway. When we arrived they had given the car we were renting away. So we were left with either upgrade or not have a car at all over the Christmas period. The upgrade cost an extra 500 pounds plus insurance. The only car available was a brand new BMW. We didn’t want that but there was no choice to get to the wedding we were attending. When we returned the car, the attendant only focused on the wheels and found the tiniest mark. Even though we took full insurance apparently the tiny scratch on the alloy wheel was not cover by the full insurance. My advice check and take photos of the whole car plus the wheels and the alloy wheels. We travel a lot for business and we will recommend that our company no longer uses thrifty. And we will never use them again.
It’s my first time renting a car from a Thrifty and since then I will avoid future rentals from this company. My issue is related to Thrifty‘s policy of charging the refundable deposit on my non Sterling currency credit card. Therefore when the deposit was refunded I lost close to £40 on the exchange & fees which I felt was unnecessary and avoidable. They could have just booked it like Enterprise, Europcar or Hertz would in my recent experience instead of charging it. Very poor policy & not very friendly to foreign customers. I also felt the guy manning the desk was not helpful. When returning the car I was told to drop the keys off despite the fact that the guy at the desk was not pre-occupied. I prefer for the car to be checked whilst I am there in person to avoid disputes via emails. Thankfully I received an email soon after ie 20 minutes later confirming all in order.
Read lots of negative reviews on Thrifty before renting the car so I was quite nervous, but as a young driver under 25 it was all I could afford. My experience turned out to be great; friendly staff, good car, and reasonable rules. I picked the car up in the evening when it was already dark out, then the next morning I noticed a scuff on one of the alloys. I called them to let them know, they made a note of it, and no problems thereafter. Would certainly rent there again!
We hired a Jaguar for 10 days. Unfortunately on the first day I had a puncture/damaged tyre which could not be repaired as it was evening time. Thrifty arranged the collection of the car and we took it back to the airport. They gave us another car within an hour. The service from all Trifty staff was very good. When we dropped off the replacement car at the end of the rental all the paperwork was ready and they took time to explain the charges for the damaged tyre and how to claim on my insurance. Also my rental deposit was returned back to my credit card the same day as I returned the car. Great service. We will use again for sure.
I've hired from Thrifty Edinburgh Airport around 10 times in 5 years or so. I've never experienced any issues.Only thing I can relate to is maybe slow service as there is a fair bit to cover at pick up. Generally I get a car i am very satisfied with. One thing that gets me is Thrifty prices are exceedingly cheaper and I can't find the catch. I needed a short term hire for 3 days and got a BWM 118i for 99 pounds where as i was offered a Peugeot 3008 from neighbouring company for 240 pound for 3 days. I went with the BMW. I got a BMW 320i M-Sport for 6 days for a snip of the price from what the neighbouring companies were offering. I understand Thrifty only has 20 vehicles and Europcar have 250. This doesn't make a difference IMO as Thrifty are far cheaper and I've maybe been lucky to have no bad experiences so far other than a sluggish service desk when the staff are working solo. I understand the risks of hiring cars but touch wood i've been fairly ok so far. Special mention to Gail & Nicola for their friendly service. And to the young Slovakian lady at drop off for her kind service and assistance.
Do read and take in to consideration all the posts. Thrifty is not organized, cometely unreasonable with charges. You pay a ton in administration fees especially with exchange rates if you are from the US Completely unreasonable damage charges. They will charge long after you have left and won't go over the car with you, so they can make up whatever charges they want about "damage." Just as others have written, they will make up damages that aren't there. I got a 300 pound and 50 pound administration fee charge for something made up about the tire, again same experience others have had. AVOID! Especially if you are from the US, they will take advantage of you. Very disappointed and to be honest mad. I will never give the my business nor let my friends and family. They are not "thrifty" go for another rental car company. Hertz seems to be more honest, I am going back to them.
Hired a compact car last weekend and Thrifty were the cheapest company at the terminal, £58 for 3 days. I havent used them at Edi Airport my last two times were with Hertz, but I thought would give them a go. They are tucked away on the right as you walk into the rental building. Didnt realise you need to bring ID which has your address, the lady at the desk said without this I wouldnt be able to rent but luckily I had a PDF letter in my emails. You also have to pay £500 deposit up front, she said its usually paid back within 3 days after the rental. After the ID and online DVLA check I asked for the Fiesta which was highlighted when I made the online booking. That wasnt available so I was offered a Hyundai I10 or Suzuki Swift, the lady recommended the Swift. I did try and banter for a free upgrade but to no avail : Anyway the Suzuki was an excellent wee car, bluetooth, decent CD/DAB stereo, A/C, 4 doors. Not exactly Swift but fun and very Thrifty on the unleaded, I did over 400 miles in town and mway and it used less than 6 gals so around 70mpg..amazing! No issues upon return and the £500 deposit was returned to me this morning car was returned early Mon evening so actually in less than 2 days. Its a good thing I didnt let the lowish Google reviews score of 2.7 put me off. Definitely worth considering if you are after a cheap little rental car.
Worst rental ever! After two days driving around Scotland in a rented Mini-Van, I returned it spotless, just to hear they found a nail in the inner section of one tire. I asked whether the nail could have been there when I rented it, as the tire was not losing air, and they said "No way, impossible" without giving further explanations. As I did not have full coverage, they wanted to charge me 400 Euro for just one tire!! claiming it was company's policy. I never heard of any other rental-car company charging any fee for having a flat, so I refused to sign the bill and asked for Customer Claim Forms, which they did not have this is against the law, and they simply gave me a customer support telephone number to call the next day it was sunday. Regardless of my efforts, as they have your credit card info on file, they charged me those 400 EUR for the single tire. Never ever renting a car again with these professional swindlers.
Worst experience you can get! We booked a rental car and were charged 250 GBP after we returned the car without any damage and a full gas tank. We were forced to sign the from, that the car is checked in the morning of the next day. When I said, that I don't want to I was told, that I have to and: "what you are looking for is trust". I know why I don't trust Thrifty. It's because they can Charge you for whatever damage they want.
