The Volunteer
"The Volunteer is a Grade II listed building rebuilt in 1897 to commemorate the Sale and Ashton volunteers who gathered in 1803 to fight the possible Napoleonic invaders. The pub is a hub for drinkers and sports fans looking for a quality pint and weekly entertainment. Raised areas and fixed seating extending into the open space break up the pub to make the interior warm and welcoming. Three darts teams are based here, which makes for some lively evenings. The popular pub boasts live daily sports entertainment on Sky and TNT Sports, ensuring you don’t miss any of the big games. You can enjoy an array of monthly entertainment featuring live singers, musicians and karaoke. We also have darts and a pool table."

New landlord October 2023. Now a proper United pub. £2.85 for a good pint of Holts.

New landlady Emma, very nice lady. Good pint of Holts, then was on their lager as they changed the bitter barrel, nice and spacey pub and if its sunny plenty space in rear beer garden. Recommended. Bit far for me but when I'm in the area...
Went before the new landlord/lanlady came in but at the time it was minging and filthy - The dirtiest smelliest mens toilets ever encountered paint peeling off the walls, dirty bar, cig dimps littered all over the front door - AwfulService: 3/5
Went there at last Saturdays welcoming party best night I've had in Sale for ages place was packed everybody was friendly great atmosphere & no idiots good DJ great landlord & staff!Atmosphere: 5/5
Saw the George Michael tribute and Elton John. But the Blondie tribute was excellent Service: 4/5
Great cheap friendly pub. Popped in a Saturday evening when the entertainment act were half way through their first set. Pretty good singers and were good entertainers too. Saw a poster near to where we sat behind the stage which informs of live acts every Saturday here. It's a Holt's pub, if you've been before you'll know great value and their typical line up of own brewed beers
Nipped in for a quick beer after arriving too early to meet my mates. Relaxed for 30mins with a beautiful pint of black. dark mild Cheap beer £2.70 What a great price. Pity I was meeting my mates in another pub in Sale. Still got great options in Eccles were I live for another pint of black. others HOLTS beers are cheap and great to drink as well but black is my favourite.
Traditional Holts pub. Wonderful bitter at £2.15 a pint. A warm, friendly welcome from excellent landlady and her husband. Great food during the day at unbelievable cheap prices. I wish there were more old fashioned pubs like this.
