This place dissapoints on many levels. Starting from the food. Meals came out cold, blant and in small portions. Presentation was horrific - I could not believe how can any trained chef do that low level food at such a high price. Apple crumble consisted of apple sauce in a bowl dusted with oatmeal cereals, at the beginning I thought it was a joke but they serve it to us for real. It was a crumble without any crumble!! Beef was tough to eat, very blant, no sauce and came out cut in even squares like blocks of soap. Managements should seriously consider changing the chef immediately!! Staff is not trained and remains without supervision. Waiters did not acknowledge large group of people coming in until after standing for 7 min we prompted the discussion about the booking. No one asked us how was the meal but they surely remembered to put service charge on food and the drinks. Most of the staff was standing behind little cabinette chatting and having drinks instead of checking on customers or being in the room. Drinks - my mulled wine was served luke warm, almost cold but at least the knew how to pour the pint. Ambience - place is cold and without heating in order to save owners money. I was sitting in a jacket as did others members of the group. Another joke. I will never come back to this place again and will always discourage everyone from doing so. Poor service, high prices, horrific food make it a one star. Management should seriosly consider taking some decisive action.
The experience at the Vestry Restaurant and bar was frankly amazing! The food and service could not be faulted! I definitely recommend trying the passionfruit parfait with mango and mint salsa... It is to die for!
Great food, stunning building and fantastic service. One of the best meals in Southampton
Unique venue & food very good but disappointed as we were not made aware of set menu only available on the night we booked.
Lovely surroundings, free parking at restaurant, if you are lucky. Varied menu, sounded nice, but I didn't enjoy the pork chop, it was tough and undercooked. The potato mash it sat on was more like mush than mash, my wife and friends were disappointed too with the quality of the meal. The red wine was nice. The wait was rather long too and the place wasn't busy. All in all, a poor experience
Such a lovely place in such a convenient location opposite the theatre. What a shame that the service and food did not match up. The food choices are limited no pasta or curry and the food is bland in taste. Menu definately could do with a revival. The service at the bar was slow in the extreme. No problem with the lovely staff it is just that there aren't enough of them to deal with the busy time before the matinee. I can't speak for the other busy times. We won't visit again for a meal unless the menu is changed and if the bar only has 1 member of staff serving and more than 1person waiting we will go elsewhere. Shame.
The place is very nice, the service is good, the food is also OK. However value for money... Sorry but you either reduce the cost of the menu from £30 to £15 or really need to rethink the approach and hire a chef that can provide the Wow factor. I had paid 45 for a 3 course meal in other places and despite being expensive I am always trying to be back. But, in the Vestry, I am sorry but I don't have that feeling. Expensive and definitely not gourmet. Nice food, though.
Nice venue, we have been three times, every time we have been rushed with each course. Being an old church it is cold in the winter inside. The food is very reasonable but standard, I requested if I could have salad instead of fries, all they could produce was lettuce leaves, so I don't think they can deviant from the menu. But it is handy for the theatre and expectable, and I would use again but only when it is warmer.
We have been to the Vestry before and has amazing food and service, however this evening has not been so positive. Initially the bar staff were arguing in front of us at the bar with the manager- twice during the evening. We booked at a table a 6pm, to be informed there was no availability until 8pm- from observations the restaurant was empty . We sat to our meal eventually just after 8pm, as table not ready. Service was appalling, waitress reaching over us, drinks ordered before food but didn't arrive until half way through our meal. Various items not available from the menu even though the restaurant was almost empty, cold starter, one slice of toast with starter - not adequate! At 9pm we were asked if we wanted dessert, only the dessert chef was going home. No checking in to ask how our meal was, bill came and was incorrect- meal deals only recognisd on cheaper meal who has not ordered those meals and to top it off the staff had a pizza delivered for themselves before we left . Also cutlery and glasses left on chairs around us, atmosphere was very negative and not at all inviting, we felt as though we were an inconvenience. Oh also 2x fire exits had labels over them marked with private and from our table we observed overflowing bins and waitress pushing rubbish into the bin with her bare hands-on not hygienic at all!!!
Everyone agrees this is stunning building, but the food last night was, to be blunt, a rip-off. We had the early evening set menu which sounded great on paper, but when the food arrived there was a stunned silence from the four of us - both the mains and desserts could only be described as micro portions. They would have been tiny if starters, but as main items they were a joke. Thankfully the concert in the Mayflower - Elvis Costello - was a delight and the evening was saved!
