Very nice and cosy pub, with food better than your average pub grub! They focus on fish and there are some great dishes with high quality fish on both the classic menu and the constantly changing specials. The flavours were fun and creative, pairing fish with things you don’t see much elsewhere - they do still have the classics too though!nnThe food was indeed very nice, but a little pricey for what you actually got. The oysters were especially good and £2.50 for a plain one isn’t actually that bad! The service was lovely the whole night and we had a very romantic evening :
The seafood here is excellent, it's fresh, it's creative and it tastes fantastic. The oysters were exactly as they should be - fresh and clean. The highlights were the specials with some nice touches like the scallops with a chilli miso butter and the king prawns in a brioche bun with remoulade sauce.nnThe whole undressed crab was good value but it's an effort to eat - as it is covered in a hot butter sauce making it a messy proposition, if you're experienced at breaking down a whole crab its not too bad but even I couldn't get it done before the rest went cold.nnValue wise the prices are about average for seafood - not too expensive, not cheap either. I'd say the lobster was perhaps priced a tad high compared to everything else but it will depend on season and demand.nnI would add the bar had an excellent selection of drinks to accompany the food, some unique craft beers paired particularly well with the seafood. While the clamato in the bloody / virgin Mary is a great choice.nnThe disappointment here though was the service. It wasn't a particularly busy Saturday afternoon and there were 3 or 4 running front of house but there were times when no one was at the bar or even in the restaurant. We were asked for our order but needed a few minutes, 10mins later no one had even looked our way. One of the wait staff in particular looked like they did not want to be there, rolling eyes, making odd comments and just being a bit moody. However the rest of the staff were very friendly and nice, it was just difficult to get their attention in the first place.
Absolutely fabulous! Booked a table for 5:30pm and came with our 3 year old and 6 year old. We were greeted warmly and treated to some lovely wine and great beer brewed on site. The squid was unbelievable! Properly delicious and the buffalo mussels and Thai prawn curry were brilliant. A real gem of a place where quality of produce and a sense of pride in what they are doing really shines out. It was a real treat and the kind of place that reminds you that the most skilled places keep it simple and let the ingredients speak for themselves. Thank you!
FOOD - menu is pretty good. Specials board had some good options, although all the best ones had run out by the time we’d ordered 9pm. The main dishes were all a bit watery and sauces lacked depth of flavour.nnSERVICE - all staff were friendly and well informed. Knew the menu well and were very knowledgeable.nnSUMMARY - hard to know if we ordered badly, as we were underwhelmed. With the vast amount of options in Brighton/Hove, I wouldn’t race back.
One of my favourite places to eat in Brighton/Hove, the seafood here is always fresh and tasty. Standout food with pleasantly palatable food and amazing staff who are willing to answer questions or at least find out answers!nnGo here 1-2 a year and never any issues and if there have been, quickly resolved!nnGreat food, staff, and atmosphere.
