A confused pub. I pop in every now and again and have been doing so for 10-12 years. It was my and my mates regular years ago when Paul ran it and had the quiz. It's slowly changed though over time for the worse. It's sort of a family pub, part food pub and part den for the local louts. It seems to try to cater for all and as a result lacks identify. Last time I went (about 2 months ago) we got offered cocaine which was obviously what a good few of the lads in there were on. The guy then would just not leave us alone as we tried to play pool. In the end I got fed up and left. It's a bang average pub with questionable clientele (not all bad i should point out). Also a bit run down despite its "refurb". Zero motivation to go back. Drinks fairly priced. Not had food there in years so cannot comment. Staff reasonable.

called in for something to eat prior to going out to the theatre, we were expecting something hot and quick.... it was only 4:50pm so not too busy.. we got neither ! Battered mushrooms were dropped onto a couple of lettuce leafs and the dip presented in a small plastic bowl..... Scampi, chips and peas - cant go wrong with this surely.... wrong... served on a cold plate the chips were warm and the peas had less warmth in them... the scampi was thankfully the warmest food on the plate.... Apple crumple and custard.... it was apple pie with a thin crumble topping and the custard - yep you got it only just warm.... We were on a time schedule and for this rubbish to take an hour was dreadful ... had to ask staff twice to chase my food up .... I would normally complain but did not have time to spare for it... for a newly refurbished pub - that was actually a repaint and new carpets... tonights visit was 100% rubbish

The southdowns is a nice place to eat. It's great for family's and you can reserve a table. The only problem I have is that for extra sauce it £1 and you only receive a tea spoon of said sauce. Other than that it's really good.

Nice friendly pub, with great public transport links (the 700 bus stops outside). Whilst I didn't try the food, it smelled and looked delicious. The pub itself is spacious, with ample seating areas, although we had to obtain some extra chairs from elsewhere for our small table - standard these days. I've visited the Southdown for many years, and will continue to do so. It's stood the test of time much better than me.
