The Roebuck

About

The best pub in Borough, maybe even the world. Local brews and sustainable chews.

Story

The Roebuck could well be one of Borough's best kept secrets. Independently owned and loved by the locals, The Roebuck offers a broad selection of local beers & spirits, a freshly prepared menu full of sustainably sourced produce, an easy going atmosphere and a friendly welcome as standard.
Tucked away at the leafier end of Great Dover Street, The Roebuck balances being a little bit off the beaten track with being incredibly easy to get to: Borough tube is less than a five minutes stroll away, whilst a ten minute quickstep brings you from either Elephant & Castle or London Bridge.
Built to imposing Victorian proportions, the large, airy pub boasts an incredible upstairs lounge with an open fire, packed with period fixtures and an indeterminate charm.

"Beautiful, sustainably-minded, Victorian pub with a large, open outside area and a relaxed upstairs lounge."

I enjoyed my visit to The Roebuck, I just wish it had been better. The staff, seating and service was all fairly pleasant but the issue I have was the food. Two Starters - Scotch Egg & Mushrooms on toast - Really delicious, melt in your mouth and extremely happy. Two Sunday Roasts, 1 Beef & 1 Pork - Gravy was tasteless, it felt far too watered down and had no flavour - Both meats overcooked - Enamic looking potatoes There was no consistency with the quality of the food and it did disappoint me a bit. Two adults, two Starters, two roasts & two lemonades ~ £61.20
The place is an excellent pub to visit! Great Pub with plenty of space and large outdoor sitting . The food menu is interesting , the food was delicious, nice presentation , great service and chill atmosphere!I The staff were very welcoming and they were happy to discuss menu’s choices and make suggestions . I would definitely recommend it!
Still a favourite many years on. This was my local when I lived in the nearby square for a few years & the staff are brilliant. Hard to find anything like this in Australia - so every time I visit London, I make tracks here. Great beer selection, good spirits and lovely outdoor seating when you feel so inclined. Scotch egg is also a highlight!
Great traditional pub with a nice relaxing atmosphere. Beautiful decor and serves a good selection of beers. Definitely recommended.
Went for the quiz night which was good. Ordered fish and chips and a gin and tonic from their gin menu. The fish and chips never came as they had forgot to put the order in and had to ask a few times. I was given a double without when I asked for a singular so was surprised at the price. Bar staff don’t seem to listen properly. The bar is nice.
Nice, modern and friendly pub with lots of things on offer during the week. We played a table game while we were there - good fun. Good range of drinks. The food was OK but could have been better. Part of my chicken schnitzel was inedible as it was gristle. Portions are on the low side, especially the dessert. My biggest bugbear was the volume of the music. I thought the choices were fine, but it was sometimes too loud. It made it uncomfortable to talk comfortably and enjoy the games. We didn't stay as long as we would otherwise have.
Great atmosphere for a relaxed Sunday lunch with family. Generous portions, and lovely food.
Great pub, for anytime of the day with a nice outside area with enough seats. Summers or winters, can be the go-to. Good selection of draught beers, and wine and Aperol! But they have everything. We have not eaten anything here yet, but it looked delicious
We booked a table at the Roebuck for my organisations Christmas lunch. The whole experience was very unpleasant. The pub was freezing and when we complained the staff gave us a few hot water bottles whilst we sat in our coats and scarves. The food was very disappointing with zero thought for appearance and still frozen off-the-shelf stuffing. Everything came in old tin containers and a big lump of meat we had to carve ourselves. Service was not great and small requests were met with grumpiness. We left as soon as we could to find somewhere warm and friendly. It has gone down as the worst Christmas lunch in my organisations 28 years.
Couldn't eat much on the menu gluten free pescatarian. Had a salad and a coffee. Service seemed to go wrong around the time we ordered dessert so we had a long wait. Very pretty venue though, and nice staff.
