The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

Story

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is a 1,677 bed acute hospital located in Govan in the south-west of Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. The hospital is built on the site of the former Southern General Hospital and opened at the end of April 2015. The hospital comprises a newly built 1,109 bed adult hospital, a 256-bed children’s hospital and two major Emergency Departments, one for adults and one for children in addition to buildings retained from the former hospital. There is also an Immediate Assessment Unit for local GPs and out-of-hours services, to send patients directly, without having to be processed through the Emergency Department. The retained buildings include maternity services, the Institute of Neurological Sciences and the Langlands Unit for medicine of the elderly and rehabilitation. The facility is operated by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. While some parts of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital have their own distinct identity and dedicated specialist staff, such as the Royal Hospital for Children, each is completely integrated with linkages for patient transfer, diagnostic services, emergency care and even a rapid access lift from the emergency helicopter pad on the roof of the adult hospital. For example, the new children’s hospital is not only linked to the adult hospital but also both the adult and children’s hospitals are linked to the redeveloped maternity building and to the Neurosciences Institute. The hospital hosts services relocated from the Western Infirmary, the Victoria Infirmary including the Mansion House facility, some services from Royal Infirmary and a range of inpatient services from Gartnavel Hospital, Glasgow. In addition, the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow, previously based at Yorkhill, was moved to a new building adjoining the adult hospital and renamed the "Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow".

TERRIFIC SERVICE! Was in recently to have a fishing hook removed from my hand. I was treated within the Minor Injuries Unit, a satellite of the A&E. From the outset the nursing/ reception staff were superb. The two Andys and Ann, who were directly involved with my care, were exactly the kind of staff you'd hope to meet. They were compassionate, diligent, competent and humorous. The treatment, including available options, was well explained in advance. I was very impressed with the speed and efficiency of the process. Well done folks.
I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy on July 22nd at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Though I was anxious about both the surgery and my hospital stay, my experience was excellent. I was in the gynecology ward 49 of the Maternity unit for 2 nights, and I can't thank the staff enough for their care. Everyone, consultants, nurses, cleaners were incredibly professional, efficient, and empathetic. They also allowed my family to be there as long they wanted. Their dedication to making me comfortable during this challenging time was truly remarkable. If I ever need to return, I know I'll be in excellent hands. Thank you
On Tuesday of this week my wife and myself were travelling in a taxis which was involved in an accident. The taxis driver took us to A&E and although there was about 30 people waiting we were assessed in about 10 minutes . Then about an hour later seen by a doctor .My wife was treated for cuts and bruising and we were discharged after about 3 hours. During this time we were disgusted by the abuse the staff were given by certain people waiting to be seen. The patience they showed was remarkable in controlling certain so called patients. These staff members were there to help and did not deserve the abuse they got. We are from Dumfries &Galloway and although we moan when we have to wait we are very lucky down here. Our many thanks to the Taxis driver and Hospital Staff who were so attentive and kind to us you were all amazing people. An 81 and 70 years old couple from Castle Douglas . Thanks .
Had to take my daughter on a Saturday night. The place was mobbed with Trnsmt, but the staff were fantastic. We were helped in by an ambulance driver, reception staff got us booked in quickly then we were looked after by a few nurses and porters. Every member of staff was so nice and helpful. Truthfully I can't praise them enough. Well done to an extremely hard working team.
I had a discectomy & decompression on Monday and I found all of the staff absolutely excellent. I was kept well informed about everything on the day of the operation and onward. I cannot fault the care I received from the operating team to the staff on the various wards, from the waiting area to the recovery ward and then, finally, in ward 10a. The NHS is currently much maligned for various reasons however I cannot praise it highly enough. It’s a pity about the extremely long waiting list for this procedure but that is not the fault of the staff. Well done The Queen Elizabeth. Credit where credit’s due.
My granddaughter has a very rare condition and has to attend the hospital regularly. The consultants and staff are excellent. 4 years ago they saved my dad's life following a massive brain haemorrhage. The surgeon was amazing and we couldn't believe it, when my dad was sitting up joking with the nurses after such a serious event. He was 84 at the time. I can't thank them enough for the care and expertise shown to my family.
I have tonsillitis, they diagnosed me, and told me to wait 8 hours to see the doctor just to get medicine. They don’t even have me in a room, I am in the waiting room. The nurses have been quite rude as well. It would be quicker for me to travel to London and get treated there then wait this.
The 3 stars are for the staff of maternity minus 2 women who need to leave and make room for midwives who want to be there and special care baby unit who were all amazing. I'd give you 5 if I could rate separately. The 2 stars down are for the planning team who decided a massive hospital like this only requires a very limited amount of parking. I visited daily for almost 3 weeks and ever day struggled to park. Please also note...on the left of the main road before turning in to the entrance of maternity there is a private bit of land being used as a car park. No signs explaining this. It is £5 to park. The man in the hut hiding to take payment on the way out was so sleazy giving me inappropriate compliments as I tried to pay to leave.
7 hours in ER or, as they say A and E, for a.minor laceration not requiring stitches. The ordeal was a 4 step medicinal process triage, initial exam, EKG, and final exam. Each of 1st three steps took an hour. The last took 4 hours. The queue manager was the absolute pits. Hope I can attach his photo at the end. Rude and crude. After he told me of the ridiculous wait time he asked if that was OK. Dumb fn question. The trouble is this service is normal there. I was there for my wife BTW. To recap, 7 hours to apply a dollop of ointment.
I am saddened to be writing this review but I feel it is necessary to highlight the failings on ward 8a . I have sent a complaint and received a reply and although I have accepted their apology and assurances that changes will be made to improve matters I want to be able to reassure other patients and families. My mum 91 was admitted in March with Pneumonia and had a stay of 6 weeks ,she thankfully recovered but went through hell as did I with the stress of it all. I struggled to get into the ward ,the nurses station was never manned .You could rarely speak to anyone for an update on mums condition before seeing her. I feared entering her room. Mum fell despite me warning the charge nurse she couldn't walk unaided The treatment administering antibiotics was correct and successful which I am so grateful for .The issues were the lack of staff resulting in inadequate level of care when it came to washing, toileting and feeding as mum couldn't herself . After fighting the infection I watched my mum fading away through lack of food and swallowing issues. The consultant took me aside 3 times to tell me mum was at end of life. I never wanted to make a personal attack on the charge nurses or doctors on occasions they done their best under difficult circumstances and working conditions but I just hope and pray no one else goes through what we did.
