The Playden Oasts Inn

About

You can be sure of a Warm & Friendly welcome at the Playden Oasts. Serving traditional British Food at is best.

Story

The Playden Oast dates back to the start of the 19th century. Up until the early 1970s it was owned by the Matthews Family and run as working Oast House. Hops would have been picked in the hop gardens by gangs of pickers and taken to the Oast to be dried using a flow of heated air through the kiln.

Having been sold to Peter Cook in 1972 and run as a Private Club for just three years, a fire broke out causing widespread damage. Upon refurbishment the premises were converted into a hotel.

Robert Press obtained the Playden Oast in 1993 and ran it until his death.

Boasting many of the original features, including the impressive roundels themselves, the Playden Oast offers a unique hotel experience in the heart of the East Sussex countryside.

You can choose from eight traditionally styled, en-suite bedrooms including two large round bedrooms in the centre of the building.

There are also two restaurants offering a wide range of locally sourced dishes, served daily.

Families and pets are welcome.

Lovely setting, nice staff. Food, very lacklustre. I ordered roast pork with "all the trimmings", there was no crackling which I expected with "all the trimmings". The food was cold and not at all pleasant. My partner had the steak and kidney pudding which she enjoyed. Our guest had the salmon but left all her veg, I think she was too polite to say anything. We will not be going there again and would not recommend if you like hot food. Received a response from owners accusing me of hiding behind a review. You had many people at a meeting and it wasn't the time to bring anything up. We had a guest for lunch and didn't want to embarrass her.
Pepper and Twiggy would like to give a 5 paw review . The room they stayed in was warm, clean and spacious and had its own garden area. What a bonus for their humans who did not have to go out for night time walkies before bedtime. The doggies particularly liked Caroline who served them sausage for their breakfast and was very friendly and kind. The humans were happy too as this was a genuinely human friendly and dog friendly inn. We much enjoyed our stay despite the atrocious weather. Rooms: Very clean and comfortable in Room 10.
The beams in the room are lovely, the hotel was clean and tidy and the pillows were very thin this is a positive for me but my partner had a bad neck due to not having the right height. The shower was separate from the toilet, which was a pleasant feature. The bed was comfy, but the TV was small. Breakfast was amazing with everything freshly cooked and seemed like local produce. The sausage was amazing!
Stayed here this weekend with my partner and would recommend for a short weekend! Great service we were checked in very quickly and great location only a 4 minute drive to Rye. We had breakfast in the morning which was also very good and tasty. The only downside I would say is I found the bed very springy and a little uncomfortable it was also quite loud from below so you could hear everyone talking from below you but it wasn’t a problem for us as we are deep sleepers. Apart from that we throughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere affordable to stay! :
- Location is beautiful, and the adaptation from Oast House to Hotel is incredible. - Spacious double rooms with en suit amenities made the stay so relaxing. - Staff were incredibly friendly and attended to every need. Checking in on us during our journey to check we were okay we were running later than expected due to heavy rain and traffic! helped add that personal touch that was so greatly appreciated Chelsey was fantastic with booking and check in! - Location was a short drive from the gorgeous town of Rye and only 30 minutes away from Hastings.
Very nice drink stop while driving around the area. Lovely grounds, beautiful interior inside the oast. Will definitely return.Service: 5/5
Rooms have everything you need. Quiet setting. Lots of character. Staff friendly, welcoming and helpful. Food delicious.Rooms: 4/5
The rooms are really nice and the staff is friendly and cooperative. We had breakfast in the restaurant and the service was also very nice. I would highly recommend everyone to stay here if they are visiting Rye.
Lovely place to visit for the experience of eating/drinking in a former Oast House. Nice atmos and quite charming. Service was good, but food was a little disappointing however, hence overall rating of a 3. Food & drinks: Had Sunday dinner. Great portions and lovely roast potatoes, but wouldn't give it more than 6 out of 10. Totally appreciate that this is down to personal taste, but I thought it was a bit like someone's nan had cooked it veg a bit soft, gravy already poured onto the plate and not very hot, beef a bit fatty and Yorkshire pud a bit 'well done'. Not a meal I felt right to complain about as it was quite tasty and nothing significantly wrong with it, but just wasn't that special.
Super friendly staff, from check-in, to dinner and breakfast. Room std double was lovely, comfortable and warm with plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits. Would def return to try out one of the round rooms - they look awesome. Loved our stay here - thank you!Rooms: 5/5
