The Pelican Inn

About

Just 8 miles from junction 14 of the M4, this 17th Century Inn occupies a prominent roadside site in the village of Froxfield, on the A4 between Hungerford and Marlborough.

Story

Since becoming a Free House it has been extensively refurbished. Upstairs there are 8 comfortable ensuite bedrooms, whilst downstairs the bar restaurant has plenty of cosy corners as well as larger areas for bigger parties and functions.

Outside there is a large garden with a stream, duck pond and two car parks, one each side of the pub.

Food is freshly prepared from local produce. Lovers of good drink will also find a choice of micro or regional brewer cask ales and wines supplied by an independent wine merchant. Stay for a few nights and explore the lovely local countryside or pop in for a drink or meal with friends. You will find a warm welcome in comfortable surroundings here.

Had a meal here tonight. Despite quiet restaurant service was extremely slow, only one person on waiting tables and bar, so long delays between courses, sometimes thought food for the restaurant was forgotten while tending bar, the lamb I had was tough and vegetables cold. Chicken schnitzels were overcooked, the desserts when eventually arrived were better. Would suggest one person not enough to cope. Food & drinks: See previous comments about food
We've always loved this country pub It's changed management several times over the years. Food was good, 8 had the fish. On that particular day, the potatoes and veg weren't the best, but the rest of the party enjoyed their meals very much. The deserts were rather indulgent.Service: 5/5
We went for lunch and were very pleasantly surprised at the varied menu. The food was really good although portions were a little small for the price I had a burger. Service was somewhat slow at times we had to search for them to order dessert but that's often the way with lower wage, younger staff and they were friendly and thoughtful just young I think. The only thing that would stop me coming back is the portion size not reflecting the price as I was hungry afterwards... I think pubs forget vegan food usually has lower calories so you kind of need a few extra chips or something to reflect that. Some vegan mayo wouldn't go amiss either. Compliments to the chef though!
I stayed here for one night on a walking holiday travelling solo. The room was spacious, comfortable and quiet despite being on the main road. I had a great night's sleep and felt safe and relaxed. I didn't eat supper or breakfast but the bar looked lovely and welcoming. Thanks, i would stay here again. It was a reasonable price too.Rooms: 5/5
This afternoon my husband, father and I passed by and stopped in for an impromptu late lunch. Well, what a find it was! From the lunch menu we had the goats cheese tart, the wild mushroom on ciabatta and parmesan & truffle oil potatoes. All of them were lush! The staff team is relaxed, polite and efficient and the wine selection interesting and affordable. The ambience in the garden space was delightful with a good choice of sun drenched and shaded areas. We highly recommend The Pelican Inn and look forward to returning.
We booked on Saturday afternoon for the evening and they had space. Lovely friendly staff, who were really welcoming. We had a bottle of wine between us and asked about the ‘4 sharers for £24’ deal, which only had one customisable vegan option, and asked to add the soup starter as a fourth it was cheaper and was outright told no. We ordered four starters/sharers and two meals. When brought out, one of the starters had been forgotten, when enquired about, we were told it would be a few minutes. My vegan starters the hounds and bread and soup were fantastic. His chicken wings were a bit dry and the belly pork tasted nice but was undercooked and not crispy. I had the one vegan main, the wellington, which was really tasty but the veg was super salty. He had the sirloin, which he said was good but moult worth the £31 price tag. We had puddings. My fruity Belgian waffle sundae was a delight! His sticky toffee pudding was the best he’s ever had and said made up for any niggles with the rest of the meal. Overall we really enjoyed our experience and would go back.
Excellent service and lovely food. The Sunday Roast was the best. Compliments to the chefs.
