The Painted Heron

About

Modern Indian cuisine specialising in vegan dishes; all meat used in our cooking is free-range and slow grown, and seafood from sustainable stocks.

Story

Since it's opening almost a decade ago, Head Chef Yogesh Datta has received considerable critical acclaim for his interpretation of 'Modern Indian' cuisine at The Painted Heron in Chelsea. The restaurant lies on Cheyne Walk on the Chelsea embankment close to Battersea Bridge and reflects the artistic heritage of the area.

The dining rooms display contemporary British artwork to compliment the warm yet minimalist interiors and are elegantly designed to preserve a degree of privacy. An Intimate courtyard also provides a pleasant venue for al fresco dining in the summer.

Food was excellent, with unusual dishes like curried strawberries, plus a good choice of desserts, and all reasonably priced. Our food bill was £25 per head on a Saturday evening in London and we sampled starter, main and dessert menus. Drink prices were also very good and service really good. It is easy to find and right on the river. Highly recommended.
I went there at the weekend and had the curry with guinea fowl. It was absolutely delicious. I also loved the simple poppadom dips which were refreshing and very different. A 3 course meal per head worked out at around £30. It is not cheap, but it is exceptional.
A very basic restaurant with a cold and rude staff who are mostly Indian. The best part is rusty being indian, they love to treat Indians in a manner lower than the locals. That being said, the food is tasty and a welcome change for Indians looking for some home good. Also very popular with local tour groups and that is probably the reason for the high handedness of the staff. Nothing very great about this place.
We had a great dinner at the Painted Heron, on a table near the window on the side street, while the light of the late afternoon was slowly dying down on the placid World's End surroundings. Really good service, by a very friendly and caring waitress. Interesting, rich and variate menu, with traditional dishes as well as modern reinventions. Elegant interiors, with warm lounge music and a subtly welcoming atmosphere. Reasonable price, we were two people, and had four pretty filling different starters, one huge main, one big bottle of beer and one lassi for about 75£.
Delicious high end indian cuisine. Loved every course.
I ordered through deliveroo and was extremely pleased. I had the vegetable dansak, it was different from any other that I had as it was cooked without lentils but with peas. I also thought that the quality of the food was outstanding. The naan bread was perfect, it wasn't sweet and the dish wasn't greasy and spoilt with sugar, which seems to be a problem in other indian restaurants. It is a little more pricey than your normal indian, but the quality of it is worth it. I am definitely going to visit it again :
I went here yesterday. The first thing I noticed and this is usually a testement to any resteraunt was that the clientele was all white middle class. It was a warning bell.. The staff were not very welcoming or friendly apart from the Afro Caribbean girl at the front desk who was lovely. The waiter was relatively friendly. The food. I didn’t even think it was mediocre. It tasted of bay leaf and lime and had a pungent taste. My boyfriend French seemed to think it was okay. I am sorry but as an Indian customer, I have high standards and I have no idea who is writing these reviews but believe me they have low standards. Appetiser : I ordered the the popodom tray with homemade chutneys yuk where was the tomato and onion???? There were 3 achar pots which tasted v bitter. No sweetness to it Starters : I ordered the ostrich kebabs, lamb chops and monkfish as starters. The kebabs were alright but not tasty enough. The lamb chops were very nice. It had a nice taste to it. The monkfish has a horrible paste - this should have been served with a imlee sauce and mint chutney. Instead it was horrible sauces The mains were kingfish curry and lamb curry- again just mediocre. No taste to it and a little bitter I’m very sorry but as a high end resteraunt in the location it is at- I’m not impressed. If you are English, you may like the resteraunt as it will be different to what your palette is used to. If there aren’t Indian/Bengali people at a resteraunt, there is a reason for it...
Excellent personable service, outstanding presentation, good selection of original dishes. The place has no parking space available, but is decorated in good taste, intimate and atmospheric. You can stroll along the river afterwards. I reccommend it for a romantic dinner or special occasion.
Sadik and Rekha provided excellent service at the restaurant. We had gone for our wedding anniversary and the food and service was excellent. They ensured we had a really good meal and provided the best choice in starters and main course. I would always recommend them.
We had the best Indian food so far at The Painted Heron. Freshly cooked chicken pakora, chutney, garlic naan and gosht. Great atmosphere in Chelsea overlooking the Thames. Our server Antonio was nothing but accommodating.
