The Merchant is the best of a bad choice on the high street. If you are going there for a quick drink please DO NOT order cocktails. After a 56 minute wait the drinks arrived. I have previously visited the establishment and had a similar experience. I wish I could have said the service I received was due to the fact that it was peak time. However this sadly was not the case. The bar was empty and there were no pending food orders. I boosted my rating from a single star 'hated it' to a two star rating 'disliked it' as there was variety of music playing to cater for a wide audience.

Friendly and talkative staff. Excellent quality of food considering the menu is relatively cheap. Great selection of gins and beers. Nice and welcoming atmosphere for any age. Would highly recommend.

Went on a Friday night for a meal with my partner and friends and we had booked weeks in advance and still got put on a high drinks table by the door.... had to ask to move table which they did agree too, but when we ordered drinks they took way over an hour to arrive after asking them twice where our order was, even our food arrived first. But the food was terrible. My boyfriend asked for a medium steak and he got a way over well done piece and all the veg was rock solid and my food was undercooked. And to top it off they played extremely loud music from 8 o'clock without even publishing that the pub turned into a evening party night on their website. The service was appalling and the food and drink just as bad would not recommend going at all, worst experience in a bar in my life!!!

Would never go back again! I went for a meal with my fiancé and friends I booked our table weeks prior for half 7 and they sat us right by the front door, on really tall table that is just meant to be for drinks we asked to move table because we wasn’t going to be able to eat our food. Then when ordering drinks it took at least half an hour to be served, it wasn’t that busy there was only one person serving, it took us that long to order drinks we picked and order food at the same time because we didn’t think we would get served again. Once the food arrived they turned down the lights and started a disco and it was only half 8 we couldn’t see our food or talk to each other because the music was so loud. Also when ordering our drinks the bartender said she will bring them to our table, we had waited and all eaten our food before our drinks arrived despite asking serveral times where our drinks were. I would never go back again and wouldn’t recommend appalling service!

Went today. Staff stood talking whilst people waited to be served. One poor lady who was cleaning tables etc rushed off her feet was lovely. Staff didn't smile, say hello or bye. Staff on tjete phones, chatting at one end of the bar...   :/ Small portions for the money buy it was nice.
