Story

The King's Head in Chipping Ongar is a beautiful 17th-century pub, restored with great care – but it’s also a thoroughly modern meeting place, right in the heart of the town of Chipping, Ongar. We’ve even got plenty of parking.

Our decked outdoor space is a lovely spot to enjoy a few drinks, or even alfresco dining when the weather is right. Our carefully considered food menu is as fresh, characterful and well-sourced as we can possibly make it – and we really care about presentation, too.

Had a fabulous lunch with my son. The food was superb and the cinnamon apple crumble will need a lot of beating. Service was excellent, Molly was around when we needed her but never an intrusion on our meal.nBeautiful set up, kitchen looks fantastic. The only reason why Atmosphere didn't get 5 stars was it was not long after opening and quiet at that time. Will definitely be going back soon.
Had Sunday lunch today in the King’s Head and had a lovely meal with my family, they had a saxophonist/singer who was great. Portion sizes were huge, highly recommend the Lamb! We will be back hopefully in the new year :
The best thing about my visit today was the lovely experience with the staff, especially Molly, Brad, Joe and Maddie. Service here is excellent!nnMollie and Brad were super attentive to our table and made us feel really welcome. Joe made sure we had everything we needed and ensured we were all as happy as can be. Maddie was also really helpful - especially when she noticed one of our party had gravy pouring down the side of his face.nnThe food was also lovely- compliments to the chef!
Another fantastic experience, and once again, the food was absolutely exceptional.nFor a town-street pub, the food coming out of this kitchen is genuinely Michelin-style. Every dish is beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and clearly made with real passion and attention to detail. The flavours burst with every bite — mouth-watering, eye-catching and genuinely mind-blowing.nThe service was equally impressive. Ellie was fantastic — professional, attentive and brilliant with the finer details that can make such a difference to a dining experience. Nothing was missed, and her service really added to the whole evening.nAnd then there’s Pete, the chef — wow! What is being produced in that kitchen is unreal. You can taste the skill, creativity and care in every plate. The quality of the food is way beyond what you would normally expect from a pub, and it absolutely deserves recognition.nHaving worked as a manager within hospitality for over 10 years, you definitely learn to recognise exceptional service, quality and genuine hospitality when you experience it. This is one of those places where everything comes together — fantastic food, professional service and a team that clearly cares about what they do.nAnd I have to mention the background music — what a hit! It created the perfect atmosphere without overpowering the experience. It really added to the vibe and made the whole evening feel relaxed, enjoyable and well thought out.nAn outstanding pub and restaurant. Exceptional food, fantastic service, brilliant atmosphere and a chef who is seriously talented. We’ll definitely be back!
