Lovely place, lovely food, lovely service. The only downside is people keep mistaking me for George Clooney when my wife and I are craving some time together. Other than that, perfect.
Food was great. Service was poor. Cost; unjustified. Won't be revisiting. Visited 28th Jan. Two couples. Our waiter wasn't 'rude' exactly but snooty and unfriendly. He didn't ask if we wanted drinks, even once throughout the meal, and nor did anyone else. There wasn't the usual "is everything ok" interjection, which I would have welcomed as my steak was significantly under cooked. I asked for a cognac at the end and the waiter asked if I wanted it with desert or after. I said 'with'. It came about 15 minutes after I'd finished my desert, with no apology or even a smile. We weren't offered any drinks at the end of the meal, or even approached once ... in the end we were the last table, but one, and had to get up and walk to the reception to ask for our bill. Not impressed. FOOD: Starter: Foie gras which I wouldn't usually order however it was the only item I found appetising on the starter menu. My wife and I agreed that Aldi pate we'd previously bought was better. Main: Chateaubriand. Lovely piece of meat but under cooked we asked for med-rare. Our partner couple ordered the the same but 'medium' and there was an overly significant difference. Sides: string beans - ordinary, nothing special. Potato dauphinois, lovely. Desert: bread and batter pudding. Lovely. Our partner couple who've visited there several times over the years said he'd noticed that standards have slipped in the last few occasions he's been there but they're seemingly holding onto business by their reputation. Overall we weren't happy with the delays, the waiter especially and the general service, based on the prices they charge, and won't be revisiting.
What a fantastic place to have a very special meal. Thank you to our family who took us there and to the staff that cooked an amazing meal and served our food and drinksFood: 5/5
Good location and service but poor options for vegetarians. With practically every good restaurant able to cater vegetarians, it’s disappointing
The staff were welcoming but the whole thing was a formal affair. The bar area with the log fire is very nice, as were the snacks with our pre-dinner drinks. The dining area probably has a nice view over the garden during the day, but at night it felt quite vacuous. More lights in the garden might help. The food was generally very good. The chateaubriand was a generous portion of very good quality meat, although we asked for medium and it arrived medium rare. The sides are very small portions for the price. The desserts were a mixed bag. The soufflé was impressive, while the warm chocolate tart wasn’t very chocolatey and the pastry was hard. Chocolates were served after the dessert, even though we didn’t have coffee, which was a nice way to round off the meal. Overall it was nice but expensive - especially if you’re drinking wine. I would perhaps go back for lunch in the hope it is less formal.
Having passed The French Horn numerous times we arranged to go for a birthday treat on a Sunday. The parking is opposite and is a little tricky to cross especially when departing as it's a blind corner...do not imbibe and the road marking for where to cross are very faded. The bar is pleasant. No sign of ales but there are some at least three in bottle format, mainly Loddon as well as Heineken. The various entrees were fine as were the greets not as "feet wash" as cruise ship staff. The restaurant is dim and the single tea light had a limp weak flame austerity? and was a little cool one waitress put on a blazer and was hugging herself whenever in sight. The view was pleasing and the starter was good 1/2 lobster thermidor. The ambiance was fine with a touch of wood panelling. "Boris" as we nicknamed him a diner on the furthest table facing away was droning on about monetary easing and Claridge's...I wish more noise cancelling panels existed at open plan dining rooms - single wedges which dampen the echo. The box list experience where I dined at in London it's Bernie Ecclestone's favourite bar is something I would welcome. We shared a duck, carved next to us with a breast, wine and leg each. The duck was indeed the best I've had and best eaten deconstructed great with the Hocus Pocus ale. The dried seeds as a loose stuffing was superb. Whilst sides were included with what we ordered the portions were proportionally less than the bird albeit all the courses were generously served...especially in consideration of an establishment such as L'Ortolan. The other staff were fine, I heard the gardener as I know is his hobby call over 'George'. I had a question for him and he didn't return with an answer much later I asked 'the gardener'. Staff were very polite although having visited all of the Eastern European countries in fact all of Europe except two for Whaling reasons I did here them talk in our presence and might be considered rude/whispering about others? French and English was also heard Additionally we discovered staff were directed to 'Table 3' which was us, again, I felt that shouldn't be in ear shot and whilst there were hand signals too, that could have masked chest to chest. [These remarks/observations were something I did prefer at L'Ortolan] When checking the bill my last name was spelt incorrectly...a spelling I have rarely seen, which makes me consider issues arising from other admin errors - namely jars of ingredients which may be allergens - although different staff, a level of quality control shouldn't go amiss. Leaving very full we didn't have dinner when home. The next day I didn't feel well and retched in the morning COIVD negative and I cannot explain the ill turn and headache I took until the afternoon. Not cheap but top quality and would be curious to try again at another time and would recommend. Great restaurant. Service the old fashioned way which in my humble opinion is seriously lacking nowadays. Beautiful location, Elaine and the team super attentive, food impeccable. 6 stars if that were allowed.Food: 5/5
I have been dining and staying here from time to time for the past couple of decades, and the standards are, and have always been, supreme. On this visit I was meeting old friends for lunch, and I was second to arrive. It was a lovely day and our table was outside. I was quickly served a lovely pint of dark beer and my friends shortly arrived. A bit of business chat later, we were enjoying the splendid views of the Thames beside us along with each others company - such a relaxing setting. We ordered our meals and these were wonderful as usual. As a special treat, 2 of us shared the chateaubriand. Our plates were so full of meat that we hardly had the space for vegetables! After desserts and Petit fours an after-dinner libation saw us happily on our way. I have stayed here before, both in the comfortable rooms within the building and in the cottages across the road. There is ample parking across the road and although it can be a busy road, it moves slowly and motorists are usually helpful in letting you cross.
Beautiful venue amazing cocktails!, friendly and professional staff but unfortunately yesterday dissatisfied and disappointed with food quality! We have been several times and food was delicious, we have ordered steak and asked for medium, unfortunately been served rare a lot of blood on the plate, my partner ask to take my plate back and steak come back medium but I lost my appetite and didn’t eat at all waiters apologise and bring me additional green been and potato I didn’t ordered potato as I don’t like it I didn’t continue to eat my food I didn’t enjoy. I was little bit surprised and shocked tbh that I had to pay for my food I didn’t ate.
Excellent food and service in a very nice location. Good wine selection. I did find the decor to be a bit dated though. Desert menu is unimpressive.
