The Hepworth Wakefield

Wakefield's impressive modern art gallery. Multifunctional rooms with permanent and temporary exhibitions. They usually have children's art activities on weekends and holidays. Staff are helpful. Excellent playground. Some mixed experiences in the cafe with poor service and overpriced food and drink (best take a picnic).

I have visited the gallery many times since it opened. It is a place you could spend a good part of the day. Up in the actual galleries there are usually pop up activities for children to participate in if they want to get involved. There are members of staff at hand to demonstrate and support the activities. There are also workshops which run throughout weekends and school holidays downstairs in the education room. Although you are advised to book places beforehand, I have often turned up and been able to participate in the workshop that is taking place that day. We have made felt, clay models, weavings and metal sculptures at workshops we have attended. Outside there is a lovely play area with space for picnics. Entrance into the gallery is free. There is a lovely cafe, a nice place to meet up with friends for a catch up. There is also a gift shop that sells art materials amongst other things.

Amazing how inclusive this gallery is you don't need to be an art critic to enjoy the changing exhibitions. Yet its art collection is first class. Lots for kids to do 8ndide and out including an outside playground with a roundabout I challenge anyone to give a go! A really good cafe serving a great afternoon tea. But I love just looking out o the vistas

Beautifully curated, many rooms to get lost in. Sculpture and art, light installation and sound. Superb cafe, lots of interactivity for the kids and a nice play area outside. A marvellous building and a place to take pride in. Recommended. A great place to go before visiting Yorkshire Sculpture Park just down the road.

The Hepworth Gallery is a stunning display space for both fixed and changing exhibitions. Even if you're not a Barbara Hepworth enthusiast you'll still find plenty of artworks from others to enjoy. The current interactive exhibition by Anthony McCall (Solid Light Works) is alone worth making the trip. The restaurant has had a change of ownership and still provides good value and quality.
